Your argument seems to be that GoW and Halo 2 only moved consoles because they launched before the holiday season, but the same could be said for Gears of War (what, do you think it's going to be released last thursday?).

This right here. There were lots of games for the 360 that I would have bought last summer if I'd had a console like the original Gears, Dead Rising, Bioshock, etc... but it was Halo 3 that was the tipping point for me. There may well be a sizable group of people who played Gears 1 with a friend for whom Gears 2 will be that tipping point.
