Forums - Sony Discussion - Odd question about my PS3, or my TV, not sure which

Ok, so the other day I moved my PS3 into my bedroom so my wife could watch a movie in the living room (bigger TV). In my bedroom I have a 32 inch 720p HDTV. I had my PS3 go ahead and detect highest possible output for my TV set, and it set it for 1080i. What's up with that? Does it just keep making the mistake for some reason, or was I wrong and my TV set actually 1080i capable even though it said 720p on the box? I don't understand why my PS3 is telling me I should have it set to 1080i.

Almost all 720p TV's support 1080i. In fact, I know of none that don't

It's probably just a 720p/1080i capable TV. You can manually set the PS3's resolutions and simply leave 1080i unchecked.

Yeah 720p sets support 1080i but 720p looks better cause of progressive scan.

i would not recommend this however, as if the game does not support 720p, and only supports 1080i, it will play in 480p.

There might be one or two games like this.

This depends on the TV. In 95% of the cases, this is correct. There are a very few 1080i TV's that have 1200x1080, or 1920x1080 actual pixel resolution (Most with that resolution are 1080p tv's).

For those few TV's, 1080i looks better. If you have a 32", you don't have one of those however :)

I don't think there is any HD TV in the world that isn't compatible with 1080i. In fact I am 99.9999999% sure. It is 1080p that some 720p sets don't support. Many do but the TV will have to scale down to 720p.

so then...I should just leave it at 1080i?

That seems really strange, if it supports 1080i why don't they advertise that? It seems like that would make it sound better than saying it only goes to 720p.

Are there any advantages to me putting it on 720p for this TV? Or should I just let it go ahead and stay at 1080i?

If you can't tell the difference Vagabond, then it doesn't really matter. Most people prefer 720p, and your games will play in 720p any way because that is the max on most games.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I'm pretty sure that's the other way around. I think all games are okay with 720p, it's the 1080i only TV sets that have the 480p problem because the PS3 doesn't have that upscaler chip (or whatever it's called) that the 360 has. Thus, the game developers are the ones that have to create the support for 1080i.
