Shouldn't be compared.

Im not comparing them, im asking Why is blu ray some huge +++++++ feature and Xbox Live Gold considered a big -------- For the Xbox360.

They both cost more and they both deliver a better service over cheaper substitutes but in the end Blu ray is good and Xbox360 Live gold is bad.

The Blu-Ray player is capable of playing older dvds. Therefore if you wanted to just buy regular dvds and buy certain blu-ray dvds then you could. With x-box live, you can't pay per game you want to play online.

thats right. You pay once for ALL games you want to play. Best part.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Blu Ray

  • Better image quality
  • Scratch resistant surface
  • Requires an expensive player
  • Not backwards compatible with current DVD players
  • Most people are currently happy enough with DVD

It costs more than your average DVD too - by quite a decent margin, depending on where you source them from.

Xbox Live Gold

  • More online content
  • Better/More variety online games
  • Universal headsets allow for much better player interaction
  • Allows access to 12,000 streamable movies with a netflix accout
  • Argument PSN is good enough for most people.

It costs more than the other online services but is almost universally seen as better.

So why when the Xbox360 and the PS3 are compared is the Blu ray player seen as a big plus? If you add up the extra cost for those disks in that format it could cost you over $100 per year and if you don't use it, it provides no advantage obviously.

They both cost more money than competing options, they both provide arguably a better experience/service and yet one is a horrible negative, adding up to hundreds of dollars over a consoles lifetime whereas the other is considered an excellent bonus that adds value to the console.

This is an awful, awful post.

Xbox live has more online content than blu-ray??? Wow, who would have guessed?

It also has more online games than blu-ray?!

If you wanted this to be a comparison why didn't you compare the PSN+Blu-ray against Xbox live+HD-DVD? As it is, this is pointless.

If I don't use blu-ray it doesn't provide and advantage? Last time I checked, every time I put a game in my PS3 I'm using blu-ray.

You also need an "expensive player" to use Xbox live, and a netflix account if you want to download movies, all 3 of which cost money.

Dude thats seriously bad reading comprehension....

You're trying to understand why one is a positive and one is a negative, but they aren't comparable at all, so thats why this post is retarded. k?

I added this to my original post just so I could address your actual point (even though its terrible)

Edit: I don't think anyone has argued that Xbox Live is bad, but paying for it is, thats why its always a negative instead of a positive. Blu-ray is just an added bonus.

No one argues that blu ray disks are bad, but paying extra for them could be. So yea if you're not playing movies in it = not a bonus, if you are playing movies in it bonus but you pay for it.

Xbox live gold - if you're not playing games online - doesn't matter, if you are then then theres the bonus but again you pay for it. (Ignoring PSN for a moment)

I say again - both are better than their substitues, both cost more. Yet one is a bonus and one is a negative and im asking WHY.

Tease.

What I like about DVD/CD's/Game Discs/Box Art/Blu-ray and etc.

Is that you can keep them in your possession.

For some reason Xbox Live movies are only rental. I want to see my movie countless times like once Dark Knight releases on Blu-ray I will surely look at that movie over and over again and be proud that I own it on Blu-ray.

You know, that attitude is exactly the same attitude that old people have. Go find something that your grampa has/does that you ponder why he still does it and he'll give you some random excuse that makes no sense. Get with the times, people are moving digital and that's the way its gonna be. If you don't, you'll sound exactly like an old bitter man.

What are you looking at, nerd?

Maybe Blu-ray will get cheap like Every Single Other Technology.

[sarcasm]Because DVD players were always $50 and

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

Thats a good point, it will get cheaper, while Live most likely will not.

Oops, sorry.  Personally I find Live to be a plus.  I even pay monthly, so it costs me even more than it could.

Sigh........................ But yep Rol /Thread.

Tease.

Netflix. Yeah, I know you can stream Netflix on the 360 and not on the PS3 but you have a bigger selection of HD content on the PS3 if you can wait a day for the disc to arrive.

Let's go for the simplest answer:

Bluray is good because it's in the PS3, Xbox Live Gold is bad because it's on the 360.

A fanboys version of Occam's razor.  Makes sense.

You do not pay extra for Blu-Ray, it's included in the price of a PS3. It's a vital piece of the PS3 hardware.

Blu-Ray is required for gaming on the PS3.

Xbox Live is not required for gaming on the 360.

Now we have made a distinction between the two: One is an added and optional cost, the other is not.

Some crowds of consumers are always going to treat extra or hidden costs negatively.

Also, one reason Xbox Live could perhaps be percieved as a 'bad thing' at the moment is because the competition is offering a very similiar service, free of charge.
