You do not pay extra for Blu-Ray, it's included in the price of a PS3. It's a vital piece of the PS3 hardware.
Blu-Ray is required for gaming on the PS3.
Xbox Live is not required for gaming on the 360.
Now we have made a distinction between the two: One is an added and optional cost, the other is not.
Some crowds of consumers are always going to treat extra or hidden costs negatively.
Also, one reason Xbox Live could perhaps be percieved as a 'bad thing' at the moment is because the competition is offering a very similiar service, free of charge.
