Of course not but if you want good games this days you are a lot better of with a console.

Doesn't this depend on the type of game you are playing?

RTS: Consoles (as of yet) can't hold a candle to the PC (exception: Full Spectrum Warrior)

Tactical FPS: Consoles get "arcade-y" tactical shooters while their PC counterparts are much more slow-paced and realistically... tactical. Case in point: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

FPS in general: The sheer volume of quality FPS on the PC are more than all FPS on all consoles combined.

Flight Simulations: PC is the only way to go.

Simulations in general (tank, helicopter, submarine, etc): Consoles don't even offer this genre; hence, the PC is your only choice.

Tycoon games: This genre is virtually unheard of on consoles. You want to test your (simulated) business acumen? Forget the consoles, the PC is where it's at.

Gaming preferences vary. I for one love the aforementioned genres (except RTS - getting too old to micromanage so many things going on at light speed like Warcraft III) but the only way I am ever going to play my Simcity 4 is on a PC; same with my Civilizations, Caesars and Railroad Tycoons. And of course, where am I going to get my game on with Counterstrike? It sure as hell ain't gonna be on the Xbox!

The PC has its inherent qualities, just like a console, and the PC has many quality games that, while they may or may not be technically possible on a console, the fact remains that many genres aren't even ported to consoles at all. That's why I get my game on with consoles and PCs - just depends on what I feel like playing. Both consoles and PCs are outstanding entertainment devices.

You do know that space station tycoon has been announced as a wii exclusive, and tycoon games have been on handhelds for years.

Yes I do, and I also know that if you do a search for Tycoon games in gamerankings.com, there are 28 titles on the list, of which 7 are for assorted consoles, and 21 for the PC.

I am aware of what you are saying, but there are many more tycoon games out for the PC than for any other console. Far too many more:

Not on that list of course are Restaurant Empire, Zoo Empire, Capitalism, Capitalism II, Evil Genius and Circus Tycoon, among many, many others.

Of course, you are also missing the point that if I wanted to get my game on RIGHT NOW, Space Station Tycoon is completely out of the question.  Once it's out, we can revisit this post, but in any case, one or two games to encompass an entire genre isn't enough for me.

in the end we all agree...

nintendo is leading again evolution in gaming world.

not sony not microsoft not sega not commodore not atari

i hope they'll succeed in, like 20 years ago.

and if other companies will turn back on their path to follow nintendo example this is really a good thing.

we will see  more sony first party games this gen.

and this is another strategy" copied" from nintendo.

I heard a rumor that Nintendo will make a GBA with online capabilities and a internal memory of 10 gb to compete with the PSP. It is just a rumor, but I think it would be a wise choice for Nintendo. It would cost only U$ 70.

Wouldn't such a device compete with the DS as well as the PSP?

IMO depends on how you look at it. In terms of current sales and market hype they do and the Wii-mote is a pretty innovative idea (although I would prefer a virtual reality solution at some point).

The Gameboy destroyed the competition, but not due to hardware specs, more through good marketing and some additive high profile games like Tetris and Super Mario games which kids love. However for me personally I thought the original Gameboy was too bulky, too much lacking colors (shades of black & white) and did not offer enough game varierty.

Similarly the NES and Snes outperformed the much more expensive low-end Amigas existing next those consoles, but personally overall I preffered the A500's varierty of high quality games over the NES games. There's a huge gap in quality there, apart from a handful system sellers the Snes IMO also lacked game varierty compared to the Amiga 500 games library. Market performance is not only driven by technological advancements, for which the Amiga was clearly superior but also driven by marketing, exclusive games and entry price.

amiga was like ps3 now...

we cannot consider amiga a console.

a console in something designed only to run games.

so in the end amiga and nes weren't on the same market.

I think people like the most a machine that make one thing the best way rather than a machine that make many things the average way.

I see companies like sony and microsoft trying to make people change this habit.

I think that nintendo can only be killed by pc not by a rival "semi-console".

(the reason both sony and microsoft speak about pc referring their consoles, they want englobe game market into general entertaimnet market)

in the end this is market they created.

nintendo needs rivals to make their "nintendo difference".

but like they said many times they simply don't care about others.

they design consoles and pads around games they want to make not around games people want.

this is the real difference and what many fan called "nintendo arrogance".

ps:

tetris and super mario are not kids games...

they are masterpieces in games history.

a so called "hardcore gamer" must have finished these two games...

IMO there are some parrallels to be made there, for one being ahead of its time due to its innovative design. The PS3 is somewhat similar in this regard due to the cell processor.

we cannot consider amiga a console.

The Amiga designers at first wanted to create an innovative computer system, which due to investor's interests was redirected to developing the ultimate gaming console, but also due to the games console industry crash of the 80s the full attention was again directed to build an amazing computer system.

Only with the release of the Amiga CD32 games console they again addressed their game console plans. The CD32 is similar to the PS3 in the regard that both could be upgraded into full computer systems. The CD32 could be upgraded with an internal harddrive to boot AmigaOS with internet access and allowed for peripherals like mouse, keyboard, printers, virtual reality headset and many other devices. BTW the CD32 did amazingly well in Europe for as long as they were available and was Commodore's main hope to save the company from their PC branch losses and management mistakes. Sadly for Commodore they were unable to meet demand due to component shortages which were a direct result of the company's bad financial position.

so in the end amiga and nes weren't on the same market

IMO the Amiga addressed the high end gaming market and the NES the lowend gaming market. A bit similar as is the case with the PS2/Wii (low-end) and the PS3 (high-end).

I think people like the most a machine that make one thing the best way rather than a machine that make many things the average way.

IMO if the 80s Amigas are compared with the NES, technically the Amiga was able to do anything the NES did, only a whole lot better.

tetris and super mario are not kids games...

they are masterpieces in games history.

Agreed, I only said that kids loved these games. I still love Super Mario World.

You know, if you REALLY want the best visuals and sound, and if you REALLY want the biggest worlds, best AI and most realistic gameplay?

Stop gaming and walk outside. Or wait until games become more realistic than the real.

I think games have to make us experience things other than reality, not just some copy of the real world.

You mean go outside and steal a car like in Grand Theft Auto? You mean run my car over a cliff like in Motorstorm or go into a Cathedral and shoot some aliens like in Resistance?

If you really want the most limited visuals, sound and game world, let us all just stick to Pong!

I appreciate modern games as artistical efforts, art of graphics, sound, coding, story-telling, acting and directing all coming together into an interactive experience. Better specced machines only provide the artists with more tools to express themselves.

Could Super Mario World have been done just as well on a ZX spectrum or Vectrex, could Oblivion have been done just as well on a PS1? Personally I don't think so...
