 Ummmm....Jet Force Jemini?

What the fuck was that game all about

Honestly, Jet Force Gemini was one of my favourite Rare games from the N64 ... (Up until the point where you "Defeated" the bad guy and were told you had to save every fricken Bear in the universe and collect a whole bunch of ship parts)

Why do people complain when the developers do something to make the franchise fresh

A couple of thoughts:

1. People like more of the same if it was done well to begin with: you don't hear too many people complaining that another God of War is coming with, essentially, the same gameplay, do you? Devil May Cry? Zelda? Even games that seemingly get installments constantly (like, say, Ratchet & Clank) aren't looked on as being stale as they are typically well-done even if they have remained, essentially, unchanged since inception. Hell, look at how opinion is still split on Super Mario Sunshine--that was hardly anything like the defree of change made in Banjo.

2. As Squrriel noted, it isn't like there's been many outings for Banjo at all. This is only the third game ever in the series and a lot of people were really looking forward to 'more of the same' (again, more of the same is good if it was done well in the first place). For Rare to turn around and say well, nah, we're going to re-invent the wheel, people are rightfully going to be skeptical.

3. Change can be scary/uncomfortable/unpleasant: how do you think fans of God of War would react if SCEA decided to make it a charriot racing game instead of a beat 'em up? Don't you think the fanbase would be threatening to burn down the gates of SCEA Santa Monica and staking out the corpses of the producer and lead designer before the gates as a warning to others? Even if it ends up being the greatest charriot racing game ever there is going to be a tremendous amount of resistance to the idea until people play it and, even then it might not get a fair shake because nobody was tired of more of the same just yet. If you can't relate to the God of War example, simply insert your favorite platforming game then take away at least half of what made that game that game, mix in something from completely out of left field, and think how you'd feel about it. Sure, you might be interested but, if you're honest, you're going to be at least somewhat skeptical of how it's going to turn out since there's really nothing like it to compare it to...

4. As near as I can tell, Rare has implied that this is the true sequel to Banjo-Tooie which is only going to make things worse since that means there isn't going to be a 'real' one coming any time soon (or ever). Think about if God of War was only going to be charriot racing games for the forseeable future--not only would those fans have raped and pillaged SCEA Santa Monica, but they'd have likely razed the entire city and LA to boot (which, speaking as a former resident, might not be such a terrible thing).

5. Rare's record has, at best, been mixed since the end of their run on GameCube. Outside of the universally-praised Viva Pinata, all of their intervening games have been received with very mixed reviews and receptions. Naturally this track record is going to be used to judge them (fairly or not) until they demonstrate that they can re-bottle the lightning that was once taken for granted.

Now, none of this is to say that a knee-jerk, ultra-cynical, reaction is always a good thing, but it also isn't such a good thing to be so open-minded to change and hope that your brain falls out. As far as a lot of people are concerned, Rare is going to have to earn their fans on this one as trading on the Banjo name isn't exactly making anyone particularly happy at this point.

Another good example of this is Final Fantasy XII which made the battle system more fast-paced and the story more political

Yeah, that's the danger in messing with something people love.

On the flipside, if Banjo turns out terrific, a lot of people that don't know anything about the old Banjo might be quite pleased with it but the fans might never be able to see past that (lord knows I still can't get over FFVII and FFVIII after being a huge fan of FFIV and FFVI--even if FFIX and FFXII were quite good).

Oh yeah Rare also made Kameo that was a very good platformer it was just to short but for a launch game you really can't ask to much.

(I hope Rare will make a sequel of Kameo their must be one).

Kameo was in development for about four years. They had enough time to add content.

It had to be in development for longer than that ... It was initially announced before the Gamecube launched.

I liked what I saw of it, wish I'd had time to get my hands on it last week. Looks like it still is platforming, just with vehicles, if that makes any sense, which it probably doesn't. And the casual crowd really eats up the vehicle customization stuff. Will be interesting to see how the full game turns out once we start seeing some reviews.

I thought longer if I have to believe my brother.  He told me it had to be a N64 game but development took to long and then they were started for the Xbox or gamecube not sure....

Oh well it is still a great game =p and I want a sequel it is suited for it (everyone who finished it knows what I am talking about).

Honestly, if this were the third iteration of Banjo-Kazooie: The Platformer, I'd be about 75% likely to pick it up the first week (if I own a 360 by then). I loved the original titles, and if BK3 was even passably entertaining I'd likely get it.

However, I'm down to about 50% on Nuts and Bolts. It'll depend entirely on the reviews. Why? Because the advantage of "more of the same" is that I know I liked "the same" before. If I wanted something different, there are dozens of other titles I could choose from, but only BK could give me that BK experience again.

It's sort of like the thinking behind New Coke (those of us old enough to remember it). If I wanted to drink "Coke", I would go buy Coke- it was the only option. But if I wanted to drink "Not Coke" I had no shortage of options available.

"New Coke"? No loyalty to that. I certainly wasn't in the mood for "New Coke" - How could I be - I never had it before! So where before Coke had a product I might actually be in the mood to drink and would actively seek out, they choose to get in line behind the dozens of other drinks I knew when I was in a "Not Coke" mood, while they left me deprived and pissed off when I was in a "Coke" mood. No surprise that it took about 6 months for Coke to realize the error of their ways.

So I've been without a BK fix for nearly a decade. I loved the originals, and will always been in the mood for more, much as I'll always be in the mood for chocalate ice cream - even if its not the greatest chocolate ice cream, I'm pretty sure I'll like it. But chocalate ice cream with nuts? Not really my thing. Will I like Banjo Kazooie with nuts AND bolts? I don't know. And it won't be alone - it'll be competing with other titles that I may be more sure of liking. It may turn out that I'll love it, but first they have to convince me it's worth trying.

Sorry but what has that got to do with anything? Did i in some way abuse microsoft? Nintendo? I owned an N64 and played heavily on Jet force gemini, so im perfectly entitled to pass judgement on the game.

Next time, read the fucking post and try not to make something out of nothing.

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

^New Coke sucked. There was no chance that would ever be a good idea--if I wanted to drink Pepsi+ I'd have bought Pepsi and spiked it with a Pixie Stick.
