Forums - Sales - Wii breaks record as 500,000 milestone reached in Australia

Nintendo Australia has announced that Wii has hit the 500,000 mark in sales throughout Australia, and that it's the fastest console to do so in the region.

Independent market research company GfK Australia has confirmed that it took the console 84 weeks to hit the milestone. PlayStation 2, the previous record holder, took 107 weeks, and Nintendo boasted that Wii's performance is 23 weeks faster.

Nintendo DS hit the 500,000 mark in April 2007.

Oh those crazy Aussies

For such a small country we certainly buy alot of consoles and games.

1 in 40 people own a Wii in Australia or 1 in 13 households.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Im one fo those 13 households. Australia officially converted to the land of Nintendo.

Nintendo = Innovation = Wii

Its about to be even better. I know at target we have a toy sale on tomorrow. At just our store we have now 245 Wiis on sale. If that number is multiplied by how many stores we have, it will reach well over 10,000 this week. And I'm expecting it to be sold out by about 6am(We open at midnight).

The week commencing 6 July was the highest individual week of sell through for Nintendo DS hardware in Australia, with more than 49,000 units sold. This is the largest single week sell through ever, for any console in Australia.

Nintendo DS currently has an install base of more than 1.2 million units, which demonstrates that Nintendo DS continues to be the popular choice for all consumers.

Does anybody know why DS sold such a huge amount of consoles at the start of July?
