Forums - General - US candidates see Jerusalem as the "undivded" capital of Israel

It was no surprise that McCain saw the issue this way.... however Barak Obama recently announced that he too thinks Jerusalem as the sole property of Israel.

Quite a shock I imagine to the people who support Obama because he thought would be a good president for the Palestinians. I'd also say a shock to the 10% of the people who think he's muslim but most of them probably think Israel is the Muslim side.

This position actually makes him a worse president for the Palestinians then Bush who follows the 1967 guidlelines.

Who knows he may not really mean it though and is just lieing to win old jew votes in Florida.

Barack Obamas going over to Isreal in a few days as part of the middle east peace process.

also, who honestly thought Barack Obama is muslim? The guy is (or should I say was) a pretty outspoken Christian.

Apparently like... 10% of America. Though i gotta think that numbers high.

It's really weird that he's to the right of Bush of all people on the issue though.

I got interested in Obama, because to a young educated European like me, he seemed pretty much like one of us. However, the differences have really been showing lately.

Hopefully he's just highlighting those things more to appeal to less liberal voters, but even if I had the wrong idea of him, he still seems like by far the superior candidate.

Gah its such a difficult thing ...

What needs to happen is an intervention and fixing the damn map. But the Americans cannot be allowed to influence it this time. Nor the Europeans -- the Middle East must decide the borders of its countries.

Well Jerusalem is a difficult one.

First it was a Jewish city.
Second it belonged to Christians.
Third the Muslims begin using it.
Forth everyone shared the city.
Fifth - both Muslims and Christians wanted control of the city...
Six - fades into history becomes a muslim city.
Seven - UN takes Jerusalem ohh the Muslims and gives it to the Jewish population as a part of the newly formed Israel.

The way i see it Jerusalem needs become like Vatican City -- its own state- its own country.

Ohh and redrawing the map was an awful idea --> it failed after WW1, and its failing again (just this week their have been 3 random attacks on Israel ... )

Yeah... no real right way to solve it.

Can't make Israel leave. Trying to stick Israel with the 1967 borders after they had to fight wars to exist isn't fair. The Palestinians won't want anything else.  It's not there fault really that the UN took their land.

Neither group wants to give up Juresalem... and a split city won't work.

Best solution might just be the UN taking it over and putting something their UN wise that makes it a very important city to the national community so nobody would screw with it. If the UN just takes it under control that doesn't do anything because the UN rarely has any teeth.

Can't put the UN Headquarters there... not safe enough really... like the UN where a crazy dictator has less of a chance of screwing up the whole thing and killing off a crapload of world leaders and diplomats.

Perhaps move the International Court from the Hague to Juresalim. It'd be an interesting place for it. Kinda ironic too.

When you boil down to it... and listen to what each candidate says about their own plans instead of their opponents... how exactly similar the two candidates are in just about every single way... even their plans on iraq are a lot closer as Obama would like you to know.

Both seem comitted to a strong Iraq.  The only difference is Obama thinks the Iraqis are lazy and that they're security forces could defend their cities, they just don't because America is there.
