There comes a time in every man's life when situations spiral out of control and he finds his back against a wall. Maybe somebody stole his iPod. Maybe he just killed his wife and kids. Maybe he looked in the mirror and saw a fucktard. Whatever the reason, you can either get up and face the music, or you can tell the world and whatever deity you believe in to fuck off. In the latter case, pull out your list of final solutions and place a check in the suicide box. Tonight, you dine in hell.... But, are you "An Hero"?

I don't believe in a universal objective morality, but I do believe that there are certain moral rules most societies choose to make law so they don't fall into chaos, such as making it illegal to murder and rape and steal. I think people who break those are villains (unless you're stealing from the RIAA or the MPAA or whatnot, since corporations are inhuman entities with no families so fuck 'em).

I think real heroes are people who fight for the truth and/or freedom or who sacrifice everything to help people when NOT necessary. Most civil rights leaders apply. Fighting to defend yourself, your family, or your loved ones is not heroic: it's the least you can fucking do. However, fighting to defend strangers is heroic. For example: John Brown freed a bunch of slaves and gave them guns and tried to start a revolution to stop slavery. He was tried for treason and hanged, but hell if I'm not gonna call him a hero for dying in an attempt to end slavery.

However, killing a "terrorist" isn't heroic. On the other side they're called "freedom fighters." "Terrorist" is just a stupid political buzzword for a faceless nameless magical invisible enemy we're not actually fighting to keep us scared and easy to control.

I think that what makes a good and evil person is the greater good. If a person does morally bad things, but is the greater good then to me that is a good person. I just think that what makes a good person (and a hero too) is someone who is willing to do what has to be done but no one wants/cant do. Since u brought up Batman the Dark Knight...

****SPOILERS!!!*****

At the end, when Batman decides to take the blame for Harvey's murders so that Gotham City would still have the image of Harvey as their saviour, their "white knight", that was very heroic in my eyes. Any other person could have just done nothing and let Gotham City to rot because the only "good" person ended up doing what he was trying to stop so there would be nobody for the citizens to look up to. Also, like I said earlier, that decision that Batman made, benefited the majority and he gained nothing from it, in my eyes, that is what makes a person good.

ditto.

Nobody is ever purely one or the other because outsiders would perceive their intentions and actions differently.

Terrorists and soldiers are great examples. Those who feel they are represented by the actions of these groups think they are heroes, those who are being killed or threatened by them think they are villians.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Nice thread ssj12. This has to be the best thread I think you have ever created. So far with real thought out answers too.

Here are my thoughts.

A hero is a person who without any wanting of reward of any kind, including the simplest "Thank you", is willing to do anything they potentially can for the pure benefit of another person. This could be as simple as going out of your way to ensure the rightful owner of wallet is returned exactly as found to pushing a person out of front of a truck knowing you probably will die as a result. A hero is also someone who, regardless of possible persecution, will fight for the rights and humane treatment of others. Unfortunately too many of these people are called the terrorists, the traitors, the anti-(insert nationality).

A villain is the a much easier person to spot. We have to remember that to be a 'villain' you don't have to want the destruction of millions for your personal gain. Its just as bad as those people who see a person laying in the street as cars pass by and do nothing to help or those who willingly keep their mouths shut when they know their spouse is obviously abusing their children in any way possible. I would also include those who only do 'good' things so long as there is a reward or they receive some form of gratitude from those whom they helped. Helping someone for the possible personal gain is not actually helping someone, its called doing your job.

Finally, one last thought. Another great example of a hero is the single parent who works as many jobs as necessary to financially care for their children and even though they are understandable over-worked and stressed they spend "free" time with their kids and teach through example the highest moral standards a person should live by. Self respect, hard working, pride, self reliance, honesty, and determination. Along with that those types of parents also would be the ones who take personal pride in their kids studies and extra-curricular activities. Why are they heroes? Because these people are molding future heroes under the hardest conditions.

Oh, I just remembered.

Could you create a thread that revolves around the concept of equality?

You know, involving gender, race, religion, and sexuality.
