The thing about spore is that its going to appeal to all gamers, whether your casual, hardcore or whatever other label you think you are. Im guessing it'll also have some traction within the educational sector as-well. Due to the nature of the game its going to have very long legs and EA will probably create lots of content expansions to increase the creation scope of the game.

 

Plus having the sims name on the front will also help as has already been said.

It definitely shows off the creativity of the game and the range of designs, but the creatures are a bit goofy. I think a market that could have been big for this game (men 30+) will largely ignore it, thinking that it's budget or childish. Not that I blame them.

I don't know...those creatures shouldn't be there, they're kind of jarring and stick out. I would have preferred a minimalist cover for what is sure to be GOTY. It's too bright, and cartoony.

I know it would be poor marketing, but I would have liked something like that as the cover.

Maybe the logo, with a image of the massive galaxy.

Or something like this:
