Forums - Microsoft - MSFT Game Division - Concerns and Challenges Moving Forward

well while I agree with the arguments.... I have to say that they don't have the choice.... if MSFT wants to stay alive for the next generation of technology they can't just be on PC.... Bill said it years ago the future is in the mobile communication and the living room....

now you obviously put Wii in the mix when you talk about 1st and 2nd and profitability etc..... the thing is Nintendo is in a totally different ball game... they actually do a gaming platform... and will probably never change from that or at least not in the near future..... but MS and Sony are not only looking at that but at the entire media library you have in the living room with MS seriously looking at moving the PC from the office to the family friendly place in the house....

for an MSFT investor not pushing XB... is completely suicidal for the entire company..... at least on the non professional market for now... they can't survive with vista office and couple other software... (i'm condensing here but you get the picture, we are entering a new era in the IT/IS world, who ever miss the train will be left behind)

yes and no.

Pushing XB is good if they can demonstrate significant return on investment in that area, a thing they have so far failed to do by a mile. One of the big issue is that the Gaming area is never going to show margins competitive with the rest of the business so even if one day it is successfull, the only thing it will do is drag the overall company margins down...

The only thing XB is doing right now is helping raise revenue ( that's a good thing) at the expense of the overall margins ( a bad thing).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Around the Network

Lets all jump on the 'price cut!' bandwagon and just ignore development costs and profitibility

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Make a Nintendo thread and you can claim that every VGC fanboy faction have officially accused you. Pretty sad that most people ignored the content of your posts for the subject.

"OMG, don`t you dare say anything about my precious M$".

@DMeisterJ
you also upgraded bumidan posts from speculation (Sony losses) to facts (MS uncertain future), that is also irony in my eyes.

of course the point is not here..... what i'm saying it's they can't allow sony to be the only one out there..... and zune is another problem.... that's just plain stupid to have done a MP3 player... they should have gone straight to a mobile phone...

PC as we know them won't last 50 years, you can mark my words.... being a software only company won't be enough.... without saying that open source on top of that might be also the way to go in the future.... so MS is in a situation where they have to be present on those market.... B to B is one end of the business they have that one.... but right now they are loosing on the other end... they better find a solution.... and the solution is not in the PC world..... people are always thinking 10 years ahead.... a company like MS can't have a so short term perspective.... they have to think about what is not even existing yet..... what is a drop today might be the bucket tomorrow that's the real point here......
the future how I see it and a lot of techno prophete too is you'll have a pocket PC to be mobile and a multimedia box at home... no more 3 PC in the house...

my point is if MS is in the console bizz it's not make VG only and not to piss off Sony there is a far bigger reason behind it....

yeah except I highly doubt MS is looking at the XB as a gaming platform on the long run... it's just how they entered the market.....

Now I have been attacked by both MS and Sony supporters/fanboys.

I guess I can now at least claim that I don't make either happy all the time.

Which might mean I'm actually posting factual and/or unbiased articles.

It's amazing how many ridiculous posts we're seeing since the FF13 announcement.

I'm not sure what you mean by ridiculous.  Care to clarify?

Price cut is the only answer! They have held on the same price points or very similar price points for far too long. It SHOULD be at about $199-$250 for the premium by now after 3 years if it started out at $399. Natural depreciation. You cant sell a 3 year old phone or PC at the same price points!

I understand that price cuts will more likely sell more consoles.

However, will it sell THAT MUCH MORE?  I am not too confident about that.

Again, if MSFT shipped 8.7 million consoles for the year ending June 30, 2008 - do you think a console priced at $249 or even $199 will sell double? triple?

Most likely not.  So while you can cut the price, it may not necessarily make your console that much more successful relative to the PS3.  All the while, the price cut will let you bleed/lose money like crazy.

did you not watch the same e3 press conference as me?  they are working on adding other functanality to the ds.  Talked about how the Seattle Mariners allow fans to see the in game box score and pitch track from their ds during the game and wanting to make it so that you can have a cook book in your ds and showing you airport maps to find your gate faster etc.

The price cut on the 20gb model has had a positive effect so far. If it lasts until all 20gb models are gone, then that is a good sign people want a price drop across the board.
