Forums - Sales - So The 360 Is Selling At Close To Identical Rate As The First Xbox

Im sure Microsoft wont be as quick to abandon their console this time around....

Of course not, Shane Kim wants to...wiN...wIN....WIN!

Plus if they abandon the 360, not many fans will have faith in Microsoft making consoles.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

You know.... we have charts.

It's good to look at them before posting.

And let that get in the way of a good slam/snide retort? please...

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

It amazes me that people are so bloody terrible at figuring out what statistics mean and interpreting them in a rational manner.

Are we talking about the same amount of holidays?
What are current sales in comparison?
Is this an even sliding scale of sales over the same period of time?
What are the exact cutoff dates when sales begin and start?

This isn't that hard. Even the monkey knows that the 360 is outselling the Xbox.

360 started off slower than the original Xbox, then started selling as well, and now outpaces it significantly in most world regions. Overall, the pace is up slightly at the moment, but its still accelerating a bit.

Xbox 360 should top 24.5m shipped by the quarter ending 12/31/2008. I suspect it will decline in 2009, but not terribly as it approaches mass market. Theres no reason to think 360 can't top at least 35 million shipped by the time things are said and done, and it should be alot higher than that.

Since 360 sell through will be ~26m by the end of 2008, vs. ~24m sell through for Xbox by the end of 2007 when the channel was finally clear, it seems pretty clear that Xbox 360 still has a decent amount of life left in it.

The issue is, PS3 is slowly but steadily trimming into the 360 lead on a worldwide basis, and Wii could conceivably be 20m ahead of Xbox 360 by the end of 2008 if supply held up, with 15-18m ahead as a more conceivable range.

That is the issue right there. I think you guys need to look into your others for the last week and recheck your sources. For one we already saw the story out today about 40gbs in very short supply in Europe. Two, many in retail have said in the US the 40GBs have not been restocked since weeks ago. More importantly that retail source story out of Europe stated that they have already seen sales decline basically because Sony announced the 80GB model which isn't hitting until the end of August. This will impact July and August NPD weeks so you guys may want to double check your material before putting out nearly 90k in others for last week. How in the world did you all come up with this number or did you guys just try to readjust from other places? Like seriously how did you guys come up for nearly 90k in others last week.

What is more is I hope you guys realize like the Gamasutra analysis this morning the 360 is going to be on top over the PS3 for July NPD. Many in retail have already stated that the 360 is seeing very nice numbers since the fire sale with a lot of advertising in stores such as BB, GS as well as others. I see no reason not to anticipate, with Madden on the horizon, the 360 outselling the PS3 in both July and August NPD. What is more is those others numbers best reflect the shortages and the decline in sales due to Sony’s move and whatever effect MGS4 has had is long gone as we clearly see with JP HW numbers week after week. Once NPD comes it is going to be hard to keep readjusting in other places like things have been.

It will be very interesting to see where you guys put the 360 and PS3 for this week and the weeks to come in both the US and others. I'll be keeping an eye out for sure.

what the hell are you babbling on about?

basically what your trying to say is, ps3 sales should be lower? because they have stopped production of the 40GB?

Hilarious.

There are absolutely no statistics involved in this topic.

The Xbox went on sale 11-2001
The Xbox stopped being manufactured in 6-2005
That is 44 months on the market
24 million sold over that time period

24 million / 44 months is a 0.55 million console a month average for the Xbox

The Xbox 360 went on sale 11-2005
This is 7-2008
That is 33 months on the market so far
19.5 million sold so far

19.5 million / 33 months is a 0.59 million console a month average for the Xbox 360

Chart is wrong, inaccurate, who know what. The Xbox 360 sales as of today are virtually identical to the sales of the first Xbox.

Actually, your numbers are wrong.

The Xbox stopped being manufactured on 6-2005, but did not stop selling untill well after that. Yet you track sales as if they end on 6-2005, inflating Xbox numbers.

On the other end, you use Xbox 360 sold to consumer numbers as of last month. Which causes the discrepancy - Your arguing sold to consumers numbers vs. sold to retailers, which is a huge problem for your faulty tracking.

What happens if you track Xbox vs. Xbox 360 sales to consumers, using the 19.5m units sold to consumers, in the same time period versus the Xbox? We get much more accurate numbers to compare each system, at around Week 138:

Xbox 360: 19,720,000 Units Sold

Xbox: 15,169,000 Units Sold

This means the Xbox 360, during the same time frame has actually sold 29% more units to consumers than the Xbox has. A much larger margin than the 10% that you cited. You should check your numbers in proper context before you decide to post improper numbers.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

@mrstickball

I appreciate your input on this 'console wars'...with that said...taking a guess along with some logic, by the time this gen is really nearing its end (let´s say, 3/4 years from now), how much do you think the 360 will have sold worldwide?

And before you post anything else crazy: The Xbox 360 has been on market for 138 weeks, or 2.64 Years, and has sold 19.7m units. This equates to roughly 142,898 units per week, on average.

Using the average amount of sales that the Xbox had, up until this point, it's sold at a rate of 109,920 units/week during the same tracking period. So again...Much higher than the 40,000 units a month your trying to cite (0.55m a month vs. 0.59m a month for the X360)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
