In the majority of RPG's I dislike repetitive gameplay, derivative combat systems, clichéd stories, unlikable characters and monotonous grinding. In JRPG's I dislike the almost complete lack of real role playing elements which make them linear grindfests cluttered with cutscenes. Basically I enjoy real RPG's like Deus Ex and Fallout and dislike "lite RPG's" like Final Fantasy.

Do you guys hate JRPGs just because they mostly don't have actual roleplaying? Would you guys like them more if they were called adventure games?

The only unlikeable character I know about in a JRPG is Squall from FFVIII. What exactly makes a character likable or unlikable?

I would still dislike JRPG's if they were called adventure games because of the other reasons I stated. Personally, I don't like androgonous, anime styled characters, I find them to be unrelatable.

Action RPGs where I cannot effectively dodge tick me off (FF12 is very, very guilty of this). I also dislike it when you're punished severely for not dodging (as seen in many of the recent CastleVania games, where you often die in under 10 hits). And I hate guard actions that are fixed-animation and can only be activated when no other actions are going on (Kingdom Hearts, anyone?). I also hate hitstun with a passion; it should either be done away with or adapted so you don't have your current action completely canceled by it (ie. just slightly change how your current action works instead). And damn it, a 1HP hit to a character with 9999 HP should NOT hitstun them! Add some damned checks to see if the damage is even a reasonable fraction of their life, because I can't see anybody being made unable to act for 2 seconds just because they took the equivalent damage of getting gently poked by a blunt needle.

What I like in action RPGs is when the action really is fluid (especially nice is when it's possible to still move while attacking, though this is sadly quite rare), when the dodging mechanics actually work (ie. enemies don't have a ridiculously huge range of attack with a blind spot roughly the size of a quarter; Curse of Darkness, I'm lookin' at you), and when the guarding function is use-anytime, cancels your current action, and works instantaneously.

The reason why the characters are anime styled is because JRPGs are mainly made by Japanese developers for Japanese gamers.  It also doesn't help that some of the writing in JRPGs is quite akward.  In case of JRPGs, the quality of the stories has to depend more on execution than originallity since it is very hard to make a truly original story not just in video games, but in any type of media.  Shouldn't characters of any fictional work be able to appeal to anyone no matter what color of their skin or culture?

Sorry but feminine characters with questionable voice actors will never have much appeal for me, if they did then the gameplay of most modern JRPG's would still prevent me from enjoying them.

They must be like Deus Ex (the first and original, not the dumbed down sequel) or Gothic or Morrowind, etc.
As they are already easier than true hardcore RPGs, simplifying combat and or RPG elements makes them dumb games, while not making them better action games than pure action ones, it must be avoided at all: anyway they'll never be casual games, so making them overly simple goes against their target's desires.

We need to ask those localization teams why they don't make the English VA better.  A lot of American made games have great VA while many Japanese games tend to have questionable English VA.

That there aren't enough of them.

Agreed.

Infinite Undiscovery, Sacred 2, Diablo III, Dragon Age Origins and many others.  Oh yeah, there is a shortage of ARPGs

Also... I don't mind complex controls. Just hate sluggish ones that intentionally slow down the action to make it seem more "RPG like."

An ideal ARPG would control and play like an action game but with an RPG selection of characters, level-up system, and storyline.
