The reason why the characters are anime styled is because JRPGs are mainly made by Japanese developers for Japanese gamers. It also doesn't help that some of the writing in JRPGs is quite akward. In case of JRPGs, the quality of the stories has to depend more on execution than originallity since it is very hard to make a truly original story not just in video games, but in any type of media. Shouldn't characters of any fictional work be able to appeal to anyone no matter what color of their skin or culture?
