Forums - Microsoft - Would HD-DVD have won the format war if...

Do you reckon HD-DVD would have won the format war if the XBOX 360 had it built in (like Sony did for the PS3)? If not, give reasons and if yes, explain.

I think that it may have had an excellent chance, the price would've been high yet still slightly lower than the PS3 at launch (HD-DVD was the cheaper of the two early in the war). The one year head start would give serious problems to the PS3 (the main reason for blu-rays victory) then as there would already be a fairly well established format which would cause doubt among consumers who would then choose the more popular format (at this point would be HD-DVD).

It may not have changed the outcome because of the movie publishers not choosing HD-DVD and would also lowered 360's head start sales because of the high price.

BTW: I am a blu-ray supporter (always have been, ever since the PS3 was announced with it, as I used to be a Sony fanboy, now a 360 fanboy and proud).

Consoles Owned: XBOX 360, Wii, DS and PSP.

I dont' know if it would have won, but the format wars would certainly be raging right now if it had, considering they were both exactly the same. (Bluray and HDDVD)

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

This would have delayed the xbox's release and increased its price. I think if Sony and Xbox both released at $600 with competing HD drives, the Wii's market share would be at 80% by now.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Agreed, it would have totatlly negated any "advantage" the X360 has had so far against the PS3.

Releasing early & cost for the consumer.

Tossing away their gaming division for a movie format they have no real stake in would have been suicidal IMO.

Completed X360:
High Def Movie Collection

no

360 would have been 100-200 dollars more and it would have failed miserably.

360 would have gone the way of dreamcast. 360 would have been priced for at 500. 360 would have been delayed until summer of 2006 or fall. ps3 would have come out and crushed xbox. ps was an established brand. 360 would be too expensive for customers.

If anyone wants a custom sig, I'll make one for you. Just message me. I'm a pro.

the 360 probably would have been delayed and more expensive, so it would have been a very different battle

hmmm, not sure, tough call - but even so, Blu Ray had a lot more movie companies backing it than HD DVD did...

Not only would the war would still be raging but it could have quite possible lowered the X360 units sold and the market would have been a lot closer. No, Microsoft made the right decision by making the drive a optional device. It allowed them to concentrate on being a game console first and a media hub last.

I'm just saying...

Jeez, popular topic today. I think it would have had a much better chance and I think it might have pulled it off.
