Ahh the genesis of one of the greatest IP's ever concieved. This game is easily one of my personal favorite games ever.

I started playing it just after I completed SMB2. Like Zelda, I went through it without the assistance of any map or cheat passwords. NARPAS SWORD 000000 000000 (if you want one really nice one). It took me a decent amount of game play to find everything and beat this game. I finished with all 8 tanks (only 6 are actually usable) and 250 missiles. I could not get one that requires a really perfect timed jump on your way to Ridley.

The hardest part was during the beginning when I has < 3 tanks and of course the final boss battle with Mother Brain. Trying to fight her with all that crap shooting at you is so freaking hard. However, on my 5th attempt I tried something that I never tried as a kid.

A pic for reference....

Instead of standing where this zero suit is or jumping on the right side of that pillar and timing your shots, a much more definite and easier way is to just jump over on Mother Brain's jar and just hold the left direction.

In Metroid whenever you get hit it causes you to do a small jump and have a few seconds of invicibility, that coupled with touching Mother Brain's jar will hurt you causes an interesting side affect. You can just hold left while you are technically on the opening in that jar to just stay there. You will get hurt from her jar and the rings attacking you, but if you hold the missle fire button and the left arrow you will shoot her with a ton of missiles before you die (I had one whole tank left when Mother Brain died).

It was much much easier than trying to avoid the rings and other shots and jump w/ timed missile shots. Anywho, killed her, made it up and out prior to the explosion. Fanastic game.

My VC beat list now looks like this:
Super Mario Bros
Kid Icarus
Super Mario Bros 2
Metroid

Now, I think I will move onto either Super Metroid or Donkey Kong Country...

Yes it was amazing. Go with super metroid though. Its the best game of all time btw.

I never beat the original metroid. I got it when I was like 5 years old so that's probably why.... Ohhh I heard the GBA remake was quite good. *adds to gamefly list*

Thx for the reminder.

Super Metroid is still one of the best 2d action games EVER made. Pure genius.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Way to go..You cracked one of the toughiest game out there..

I cracked the gba version..Zero mission..

Believe it or not, I can't stand the original Metroid anymore.

I've passed it a couple times, including once just 2 years ago.

I love the music, the concept, and the atmosphere, but I just don't enjoy it anymore.

And yet I love Kid Icarus like my only son?

I never played this when I was a kid. It was Blaster Master for me.. but I don't think I ever beat it.

Jumping tank FTW though.

I can't stand it either. Oddly enough I like Metroid II: Return of Samus way better.

Super Metroid is, like, Metroid squared or something in terms of awesomeness. You've gotta do it.
