Forums - Sales - Blu-Ray Growth Vs. VOD Growth

So whats the point of tracking and comparing disc sales if your ignoring such a huge portion of sales. Unless the gaming industry doesn't generate as many disc's as movies do. It's an honest question which I don't expect to be answered. That seems a bit misleading, I'm sure royalties have to be equated somewhere a long the way in both cases.

In relation to the argument in this thread and why it would be counterproductive to count game discs, PC discs, etc. is because it would skew any projections one could make about the home video market.  They are kept track of though, and they are a major source of revenue for those who hold the royalties on the technology.

Look online and I am sure you can find that information, we just haven't brought it up here because its not relevant to the discussion at hand.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Kasz, where are you getting the 19.72 million figure from? Its around 14.5 according to this site. I believe the combined standalone Blu-ray player numbers as well as PS3 numbers is around 16 million, although I am leaving for lunch so I won't cite any data on that.

Heh was looking at 360. Even so The number is 11.42 Million.

Which means more people are watching Blu-rays then Blu-rays have been sold. Sure you've got rentals and the occasional free movie give away... that's stilll WAY too low of an attach rate.

I mean an almost  direct 1 to 1 attach rate? What are Blu-ray players the new PSP? Movie attach rates should be higher then VG consoles.  Not less then 1 movie per player.

What fight are you fighting if you are against blu-ray?
I don't get it.

Could it be because the blu-ray format is tied to the Playstation 3.
Do Xbox fans actually want blu-ray to fail? Why?

That is pretty pathetic if true.

It's a fight against spin. For real numbers. As someone with a lot of statistical training nothing bugs me more then misrepresentation and spin.

Blu-ray is doing much worse then DVD was... and in general is a bit  iffy.  Yet the Blu-ray consortium puts out missrepresented data saying it's ahead of where DVD is.

If you have no problem with being lied too... that's pretty pathetic if true.

Part of the problem is Blu-Ray is still relatively new, although consumer awareness is rising. All major electronic retailers are heavily pushing Blu-Ray, which will help, because it gives them a much better profit margin.

Part of the problem is movie selection. DVD had about 100% to 66% more (once again too lazy to drag up the figures now).

Part of the problem is studio support. Within the last few days Universal released its first Blu-Ray film. Paramount is barely ahead of them. Weinstein has yet to release any.

Part of the problem is the HD TV set upgrade.

But Blu-Ray biggest obstacle to mainstream adoption, a rival disc format in the form of HD-DVD is out of the way. Now it just has to beat off the DVD market, which will probably take about 4-5 years (maybe as many as 7) until Blu-Ray has a greater market share.

But believe me, retailers pushing Blu-Ray because it makes them more money (just like what happened with VHS) is Blu-ray's biggest Ace in the Hole.

Lol, so why has the argument shifted to DVD vs. Blu-Ray? Has anyone looked at the thread title? Even I got sucked in.

These articles seem to be pretty skewed in favour of proving Blu-ray take up.

In the opposing argument no mention is given to the increasing legally available VOD provided by set top box operators. More importantly it doesnt touch on the huge illegal P2P market.

I appreciate that neither are High Def but in a Worldwide recession the need to save money usually outpoints the need to see Matt Damons acne problem.

Points unproved. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Only time will tell if Blu Ray will be the commercial success DVD was.
