Don't listen to greenmedic88. With this warranty you will be able to walk into a futureshop and trade your 360 for a brand new unit any time over the next 3 years. I'm regretting not getting a similar warranty now -- getting the box mailed to MSFT is a hassle and you end up with a refurbished, not a new unit.

Unfortunately, I think greenmedic88 may be right. I remember the guy telling me that FutureShop will not give you a new system. They'll send it to Microsoft for repair and I'll have to wait for it to be returned. I'm going to call FutureShop tomorrow to straiten out these so called "facts" I was told.

Wow, that's weird. Most stores that offer warranties will give you a brand new 360 in case something happens. How much was the warranty?

Yeah, just make sure you can get a new unit, otherwise it is not worth it.

Thanks to everyone for all the puzzle games mentioned! I just got back from FutureShop. The guy convinced me to buy a 3 year warranty. I had a lengthy discussion with him regarding the hardware quality... he said he's gone through 7 360s so I ended up purchasing the warranty. It was probably a sales pitch but I didn't want to take a chance.

So here's the run down of the Microsoft warranty. Before 30 days, everything is covered. Between 30-90 days, it's limited so only some parts are covered. The 3 year MS warranty only covers the RROD.

I think I made the right choice, don't want to be stuck screwed.

Actually last year MS extended the 90 day warranty to 1 year. RROD for 3.

When I bought mine in January, a sales person tried to get me to purchase a 3-year, $150 warranty. I was tempted but figured in a couple years if something other than RROD happened, I could keep my hdd and after price drops buy a new 360 arcade for around $150-$200.

If I had purchased the warranty I wouldn't have regretted it, I just preferred to spend that $150 on games.

That's exactly what I'm thinking... with the 60 bucks I could have got 1-2 games.

If i play Xbox 360 in Thailand(which temperature here a quite high ,around 32-39 C. and i haven't had air-condition).Will it increase a chance for RROD?Should i find some cooler for Xbox 360?

I didn't buy it mainly b/c of this reason ,is anyone can give me some good advice to play Xbox 360 here?

Cooler is always better for semi-conductive electronics. Assuming you don't have a factory defective unit, keep it well ventilated and you shouldn't have overheating issues. That means both the console and the PSU (power brick). Keep it on a hard open surface (not in an enclosed entertainment center), dust every once and awhile.

I don't recommend aftermarket console coolers like the Nyko that are USB powered since they do place an additional power load on the PSU.

If you're paranoid, you can always run an ordinary fan by your console to keep cool air circulating. Won't hurt.

I'm going to call tomorrow, I'm sure if I do enough bitching they'll remove the warranty but I'm not sure if I should.

My system is dated 4-15-2008 so is it safe to assume I have the less error prone version?

That's a Falcon MoBo. The current version. They are supposed to be more reliable than the Zepher (the previous MoBo) due to the smaller 65nm CPU die that runs cooler. It still uses the 90nm GPU, but with the re-engineered cooling system also found in the Zephyr.

Check your PSU. If it's a 175 watt brick, then it's definitely a Falcon. 203 watt is the Xenon, Zepher MoBo.

I just checked, mine is 175.

greenmedic88,

I have a question for you. I watch a lot of movies (DVD) and wanted to know if there are any issues with the 360 in regards to prolonged DVD usage? In addition, my 360 doesn't have any audio when I pop in a movie but the games do.

Some are a little paranoid about wearing out their DVD drives, but again, the switch to the BenQ drive sorted out most of these problems.

Also consider that when using DVD functions, the drive is not spinning at 12x speeds as it is during game loads/access. It's typically loafing along at 2x speeds.

No audio from DVDs? What kind of connection are you using? HDMI or the component cables that came with the system? Optical output or standard RCA output?

Are you running direct to your TV or through a receiver? HDTV or SDTV?

Lots of questions, but it depends on your set up.

The only time I have audio output problems via HDMI is when I don't switch input sources (via a HDMI port switcher) before powering up my console, but this effects all sound, not just movie playback.
