Forums - Gaming Discussion - What good has come out of this generation of consoles?

Your giving 360 Achievements? ... if that's the case what was the point of the 360? It bought nothing.

Now give it a stable and good online capabilities, then you might have something.

Hmm, pie.

I think this has been the weakest generation I can remember. The games so far for the 360 and PS3 aren't even in the same level gameplay-wise as what we've seen in the previous generation. Mass effect is worse than KOTOR. GTA IV is not the best GTA, most shooters seem to have devolved instead of evolve. We get less, but prettier.

The Wii has a few signature games so far, but the library as a whole is not really an improvement over previous generations. Galaxy is great, but is Mario Kart really any better? or Smash Bros?

The only genre that I think has evolved significantly is the music genre. Rock Band's world tour mode beats the pants out of Guitar Hero II, but I'm sure that we could have gotten the same results out of old Xbox tech.

What can I say, almost every big title in the last 2 years has disappointed me

Nintendo: Innovation in the controls and finally online.

Sony: Blue Ray.... It will be what systems use next gen.

Microsoft: Still the best online and keeps getting better.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

One of the best things this gen has to be the evolved online infrastructure. Another massive increase over last gen is the sound, comparing PS2 games to my PS3 games is crazy, the PS2 games sound so flat and lifeless compared to just about any game this gen. And the overall controls of games are much more smoother and faster this gen. The online stores are also crazy, i can only begin to imagine what next gen will be like.

Three great things have come out of this generation so far:

Bioshock
Super Mario Galaxy
The Nintendo DS

Depending on the overall success and/or failure of other points over the next 3-5 years, I will have more to add.

Hmm...
the rise in multimedia consoles (arguably good)
lots of great games (good)
the rise in AAA blockbusters (good)
the fall in 3rd party exlcuisves (arguably good)
the fall in creative titles like LocoRoco and Patapon (bad, though they are still being made)
advances in gmaing controller technology (good long term)

Motion control....
The pointer in FPS

The 360 also introduced digital distribution to home consoles, that includes downloadable games, movies, tv shows, demos, and video footage. No other console before it had done it until the 360 did it. It was the first. Then the PS3 comes playing catch up with it.

Ninty: Wiimote/balance boards etc etc. Miis!

PS3: Blue Ray, will be used next gen (or rather it better be used next gen)

MS: Digital distribution, a beast of an online service

All three: All three, but to a larger extent MS, have allowed small tiered companies to make arcade games and allow them to showcase their talents on the market. It's a great way to make money as well as a name for your respective company.
