Sega Master vs. Sega Genesis, Playstation 1 vs. Playstation 2, Xbox vs. Xbox 360.

If you look at NES vs. SNES, the evidence shows that SNES was a stronger platform. SNES sold about 50million to NES 60~65 million. The factors between the two was an increase in viable competition and a shorter lifespan. But it was the generation winner and has a far beter software library.

Also look at GB vs. GBA. It took almost 12 years and 3 iterations for GB to sell 120 million, meanwhile in 6 years and with two itterations the GBA sold about 80million.

2nd gen systems ride on very strong momentum. It's the third gen thats the curse, ask nintendo and sony. I do believe thats why we dont have a 3rd generation on Gameboy.

How is Master System the same brand as Mega Drive? If you count that then Wii's successor is actually a "6th generation brand".

In the MS conference they said that according to the last NPD MS was at 10.3 and Wii was at 10.2. Im fairly sure thats where he got his info but the MS conference was the only one I had to stream so the audio left a lot to be desired. Grats to the Wii!!!

OK, maybe those are a bad example. Let me explain it this way. Lets take all Brands that have successfully lasted atleast 2 generations since the industries rebirth in the mid-80's:

They are:

Nintendo Entertainment System, GameBoy, Playstation, Xbox, DS, Wii, and for argument's sake we'll say Sega branded their line of products under "Sega" (if this makes you uncomfortable truncate Sega)

The generation over generation trends for the platform strength (which will take into consideration lifespan) are pretty similar in most cases. The first generation starts out strong, peaks in the second, and for those that have lasted long enough (Playstation, NES, and Sega) they start to slow in the third.

Historic sales dont mean it will 100% happen, it's just a trend, and If I were to put money on a future console it will be WiiToo(tm) because history shows that it will grow from it's predecesor.

intresting stuff, the 360 seems to be struggling with sales at the moment.

yay wii, now nintendo you said at the beginning of the war to focus to get third party titles, bring them so i don't have to sell my wii.
