Sega Master vs. Sega Genesis, Playstation 1 vs. Playstation 2, Xbox vs. Xbox 360.
If you look at NES vs. SNES, the evidence shows that SNES was a stronger platform. SNES sold about 50million to NES 60~65 million. The factors between the two was an increase in viable competition and a shorter lifespan. But it was the generation winner and has a far beter software library.
Also look at GB vs. GBA. It took almost 12 years and 3 iterations for GB to sell 120 million, meanwhile in 6 years and with two itterations the GBA sold about 80million.
2nd gen systems ride on very strong momentum. It's the third gen thats the curse, ask nintendo and sony. I do believe thats why we dont have a 3rd generation on Gameboy.
