Having casual gameplay doesn't turns imediatly that game on casual. Zelda is an hardcore game, will ever be. If they can addapt it to casuals. Better. More sales to come.

| Sky Render said: What Miyamoto is actually obsessed with is the same thing he's always been obsessed with: making games which appeal to as many people as possible. This is nothing new or surprising, nor is the outrage towards it, sadly. 20 years ago, the same outrage was being brought up by the hardcore gamers of the day, and Miyamoto's ingenious Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda games were being derided as "casual games" by jaded PC gamers. The cries that Nintendo was killing the game industry rung sharply, and the unprecedented success of these "casual games" they kept putting out enraged the PC gamers of the day, since they were all simple 4-button-at-most games that had little depth, but a lot of gameplay in spite of that. |
Agree.
Why all the panic? I clearly understand it will be something similar to Phantom Hourglass. And why you think kids are casual gamers? They probably play more than all of us combined. Mario Galaxy too difficult for them? LOL, when we were kids we played and most of us finished Mario Bros, Zelda, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden... harder games than today standards, and kids today will do the same.

"Though it will again emerge as a core-centric industry"
And why do you think that, Sky Render?
Because that's how industries work. When an industry is disrupted, a new standard is introduced which ousts the previous industry standard. As the new standard becomes adopted, it develops a core following. This continues until the market hits a saturation point, at which point either the market is revitalized by a new generation of products (the most common response), or a new disruption occurs to shift the paradigm again. In the case of a generation change instead of a disruption, the core user base will grow as more of the previously new users become core users, but you will often also see a decrease in the rate of influx of new users as time goes by. There are many other considerations too, but these are the key points.

| Shameless said: 1UP: With your new focus on user-friendly controls and playability, will this approach play into, for example, future iterations of Mario and Zelda? Will this affect game design in any way? SM: Frankly, some of the so-called "franchise games" are quite difficult for nongamers to play, so making accessible games for these players is key. With Zelda, we have to consider how to make it accessible for new gamers to pick up and play and enjoy just as hardcore gamers have. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168837 I don't really know what to make of this comment. It seems Nintendo want to stop making games that are specifically aimed at hardcore gamers entirely. I still believe that Miyamoto can do wrong with regards to Mario and Zelda, but if he ends up changing the experience and over-simplifying a perfect formula.. I'm worried. |
Nintendo isn't the only one gathering new gamers to existing franchises... They want to make the games so new players can join in.

From IGN: DIABLO III 2:53 -- Overhead isometric view is key for Diablo. "If you can click a mouse, you can play Diablo," says Wilson. He says the game must have a smooth difficulty curve, like in Diablo 2. Blizzard wants to attract casual users to the game.

I think you misunderstand.
Maybe i am interpretting this wrong. But I think what he is saying is that he wants to make games like Zelda, which are hard for some players to grasp because of the multitude of buttons and combinations to press to play the game. Maybe this has something to do with the 1:1 motion sensor for the WiiMotes?
But the actual game, and puzzles, will stay the same. The challenge is there without needing to press A to use your sword and B to pull on the string etc....
I guess we'll see!

well... as others have said,
they took the same approach to SMG, and that turned out sort of okay, so don't worry so much, or should i say, try harder to ruffle the feathers in the nintendo forums shameless
Why are u surprised, they did the same thing with new mario bros & mario galaxy. Nobody likes playing games that they can't beat. What they are doing now is making games much easier to beat but if u want to be a completist (eg get all stars in galaxy) it is very difficult. There is nothing new here.

Sorry, Wii Music looks awesome.
And jesus, every time Nintendo says something about it's audience in an interview, people start worrying that the sky is falling. They said the same thing about Mario Galaxy, a game THAT ANYBODY CAN PICK UP AND PLAY.
The end.
