Forums - General - Toshibas Cell based laptop released.

If sony were smart they would be licencing the gesture control for use on the Ps3Eye, and the Up-scaller stuff too - gesture control is an awesome idea.

The Up-scaller application could run near real time on the Ps3 which has 4*the processing capability of the 4 core 1.5Ghz cell used on the laptop.

Most supposed up-scalers are actually pathetic and do almost nothing other than simple filtering or interpolation. The ones built into the Better Sony and Samsung LCD TV's are marginally better. They clean up the image a little. The Toshiba up-scaller on this laptop goes much further and deeper than any normal up-scaller. It's not blu-ray or even real HD but it will give you the best image you will ever likely be able to get from a DVD source.

Owners of these new laptops are encouraged to avoid updating firmware for now as there are reports of firmware updates bricking some machines.

I was hoping for a Linux only machine that would only have a cell as a main CPU. But I doubt there is a market for that... yet.

So what will happen when I give it the finger? Will it shut down?? j/k

IBM have blades with 2 Cells on each card but they cost lotts ,I Think the toshiba is a nice balance of CPU and Cell processing, It's supprising that they dont just run a full Cell chip with 6 or 7 or 8 SPU's and PPC but on a laptop power is a very limited resource.

This laptop will thrash most desktop systems at the tasks like encoding video which have the Cell chip working on them and it will do it without using much power - cell is an efficient processing chip.

Toshiba were working on standalone DVD resolution enhancer players after they realised HD-DVD was going down. This laptop and the special software is the result of their efforts it seems.

If anyone wanted the Ultimate DVD player and resolution up-converter  this laptop is the very best.

It's a pretty good deal, Nvidia 9600, 4gb RAM in a $1600 laptop. The cell isn't used for gaming? That's what the article says.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I hope it has some form of OoE. IF not then expect some bad performance.
