Ok then. If you want to argue small franchises, I think that Ace Combat, Halo, Katamari, and Banjo-Kazooie series are all big series, and that when they get sequels on the X360, fans will flock to the 360. Moreso than the Playstation 3 :)

If it's all about games, than the X360 is light years ahead. Very few big-name franchises on the PS3 that are exclusive, Many more on the X360. Name the top-selling exclusive Playstation franchise? GT. 1 Year away. Name the next? MGS4. Major reduction in LTD sales vs. previous itenerations. And so on. So I'm not understanding your point, Xbox 360 franchises that are exclusive matter as much as PS franchises. But when you look at unit volume of games, the X360 side is much larger when we talk exclusives, and that's my point. Rachet & Clank - how large of a hardware increase was there when it came out? How bout Disgaea 3 in Japan? Answer: very little if none. And I doubt Siren will be either.

 

Oh, I agree that if a consumer see than his choice of games are more on the 360 than any other console regardless of how well or poorly those game have sold, that consumer should buy a 360.  I don't see why you are having such beef with me in believing in gamers making their own personal decisions and following those decision regardless of what console it's on.  That's what gaming is all about, right?  I dare to say that does my preference for the PS3 while reaosnably respecting other gamers of other consoles decisions somehow threatens you???

Something that not very many people are talking about are the PSN/XBLA titles that are available on their respective systems. When it comes to owning a PS3 vs a 360 it seems a little silly to discount the downloadable titles that are available.

I think that the PS3 may have a bit of an advantage in this area, mostly due to the inclusion of a HDD on every console which allows them to really put a lot of focus into developing games for this purpose. The unfortunate thing is that it's really difficult to tell how well a DL title is doing. I don't know of any numbers being tossed around about the sell-through rate of games like PixelJunk Monsters, flOw, Super Stardust, etc., but, I think it might be interesting to discuss the possibility that these titles could drive sales of a console. Everyone may not agree but looking at just the PSN lineup of available and soon to be available games is pretty exciting/interesting.

The point I'm making is that when it comes to talking about exclusives I think it's relevant to include the PSN/XBLA titles as well for comparison. It's easy to write off the PS3 as having no games worth looking at when you look at their AAA exclusives over the past 2 years, but that becomes a little more difficult when you include some of the high quality downloadable games that have come out over the same period. There's definitely something there that might make the average 360 owner 'feel cheated'. :)

For some reason all of you think that the Wii has this gen wrapped up but Nintendo has made a really faulty console for the future. The Wii sells because of the price just like the ps2 currently does, not because of the content. The ps3 has just hit its stride and the 360 has proven its not out of the race yet. What did Nintendo prove this E3? That's what I thought. I am a fan of Mario and own all of Nintendo's systems (except for the Gamecube... total failure) but Nintendo only proved that they have already blown their load on the competition and because of its ill-conceived hardware configuration it will stall at about 60 million units sold like the N64. The ps3 will surpass it when people recognize its value and its first party titles start hitting shelves. And the 360 will be close behind the Wii due to decreasing consumer demand. This generation will be unlike the last, but very similar sales wise to the 5th generation.

No self respecting fan of the Xbox 360, if they follow the numbers has ever said the Xbox 360 would beat the PS3. But my God, that gap has dwindled from tens of millions of units to a few million in only 2 short years. That's abysmal for the Playstation franchise.

As of this year, the Playstation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360 by an average of 228,000 units per month, on any given month. A decent bit of units.

However, using that same margin of victory, it will take the playstation over 2 years from today to beat the X360.

So lets add it together:

1) Playstation 3 outsells the Xbox 360 in (approx.) August 2010
2) Playstation 3 loses far more money on their gaming division versus Micrsoft (Sony will lose 1b this year. Microsoft will gain 500m or more)
3) Playstation 3 loses 95% of their exclusives from last generation
4) Playstation 3 gets trounced by the Wii in terms of LTD sales

So again..Phyrric victory. Whoop-de-friggin do! Sony, you beat MS, congrats! You may have lost billions of dollars, and every game that matters, limping into second place! You have just won the special olympics silver medal!

I believe you failed to take holiday sales into account.  The difference will likely be magnified then. 
I could argue some of the rest, but unless you really want to get into it I'll take a pass.  But I couldn't let that one blatant misstatement slide.

Ever since the PS3 was announced everyone expected it to win the console wars hands down. But you're right that compared to the horrible first 8 months the PS3 recovered ok.

Yeah, the thread is about the current war, but what I'm saying is that a 2nd place in the current war is still a major loss for Sony. And of course it's important to view the PS2 in this picture, since that's where expectations come from. Also for Sony itself. During the PS1 and PS2 days SCE was a very successful part of Sony, not anymore and even if it will regain profitability it won't ever be able to achieve the success of the PS1/PS2 days. This automatically leads to less money for the devlopment of new games and the new console, since the predictions have to be re-evaluated.

For the companies their place in the console war is of no value besides PR. It's the hard figures that matter, and in that way Microsoft is doing better than Sony at the moment.

@BengaBenga i think your the fan boy lol. The fact is this.. ps3 sold like shit for a full year. Xbox had its biggest games (halo, gears, etc) and mostly all of sonys biggest games (DMC, GTA4, and now ff13. etc) and STILL can not out sell the ps3...... this is SAD for m$. this is in no way good. Sony is the most expensive system out there with less games and features ( even tho i disagree but most people dont) and it STILL out sells 360  every week for the last what year almost? this BengaBenga is in no way good for M$ and i dont see how you can compare it to last gen. With all these games and what not they still cant sell more then the ps3. IF sony had all those games ps3 would be killing M$ now. If anything next gen will be better for sony as all the dev kits will be better, price will be better, and thier lock on exculsive content will be better. As we all have seen sony learns from their mistakes (made online better, rumble back in the controller etc) and they will be much more prepared for the competiton next time.
