Forums - Sony - PS3 will officially launch in Latin America this year....

He didn't actually say PS3 was launching in Latin America, he said Sony were going to start distributing PlayStation products in Latin America. Presumably PS2 and possibly PSP have been distributed by third parties there up until now. There are lots of developing countries where Sony distributes PS2 but not PS3, so this isn't a guarantee that PS3 will be launched there. Also, I don't think he said September, just this year. I'll search for the exact quote though.

I'm interested in whether they'll be creating a new subsidiary (maybe SCELatinAmerica?) to go with their four current ones (SCEJapan, SCEAmerica, SCEEurope, and SCEAsia), or if their Latin American operations will come under SCEA.

We'll have to wait for more info from Sony to know the answer to this, and what their release plans, if any, are for PS3. I tried searching Google News in Spanish, but couldn't find any mention of this announcement.

As for prices, they will still be crazily high in Latin America due to very high import taxes.

But Sony here in Argentina has launched officially the PS2 about three years ago. And now I'm reading rumours that they'll launch around September both the PS3 and the PSP. If you want prices, I can tell you that the PS2 costs approx 900 pesos (U$S300), the PSP approx 1000 pesos (U$S 330) and the PS3 approx 2500 pesos (U$S 850). Of course sales of the PS3 won't explode until a modchip/loader is released, like they have done with the PS2.

And I can confirm you that, when the modchip comes, they will explode. After all, everyone here has a PS2. The Sony brand is very strong here

I live in Venezuela, I have an US PS3 (which I'm sure will be the same one they'll sell on LA) and I have a lot of friends that already have a PS3. Yes there are a lot of poor people here, but there are also people with lots of money. Maybe with this official launch we'll see cheaper PS3s and cheaper games on the market, even we could have our own latin american PSN store with movies and stuff...

If they just import their games from the US like they do were I live [bahamas] then the prices are ubsurd. SONY selling ps3 over their with their awesome brand recognition would mean a nice extra amount of consoles each week though... And am guesssing that they will be much cheaper than those US imports

Latin America had to wait 2 years to get PS3. The game industry doesn't seem to be very big there then

i have a question. if a country has US dollars than are the prices automatically similar to the actual US?

No, the tax structure is simply prohibitive in Latin America (sigh, do you people actually _ never read_ previous posts before posting?). It just doesn't make sense to try and sell consoles when taxes roughly double the price of your gadget unless the gadget is really cheap to manufacture.

No, it's unrelated. Very few countries actually use US$ as the national currency anyway.

thanks, i was just asking cause 3 of my background countries use US dollars, puerto rico, ecuador, and panama. although, i do believe the PS3 already came out in PR since they r technically part of the US.

Oke, good to hear it isn't released in Latin America yet. Earlier we had people complain about both Wii and 360 selling 500-700k additional units above NPD numbers in the Americas while PS3 being almost on par with the NPD numbers. Now that I know for sure PS3 isn't released in Latin America yet means there is a good reason for this difference.

so Sony said (in little big planet power point)from this september (?)they will start selling PS3 in south america officially,,,,is Playstation brand big in latin america?how do they buy PS3 now over there?does anyone know?

Yes it is but due to piracy, ask everyone that lives on latin america, the most succefull console is the easier to get  modded and has tons of games... saddly we know thats not the case of the PS3, and thats why we will not see a big jump on sales, at least in mexico the thing goes like this:

360>Wii>>>>PS3...

and it not bashing, but we have the sick idea of modding consoles to get games for $5... last gen was something like:

PS2>>XBOX>>GC...
