For this generation of consoles, yes.

Firstly the 360 does have FFXIII, but that and SO4 are about the only large rpgs it has left. It just lost the main tales series to the wii after vespiria the main series will be on Wii, and DS. I expect KH3 and DQX(IF not ds) to go to wii. The wii most likely will get many smaller rpgs that are still good, or even better than the bigger ones. Not to mention first party rpgs from Monolith Soft, and Nintendo.(Examples of first party rpgs are pokemon, Soma Bringer, and GOlden Sun) You guys argue PS3 vs 360, but just look at this thread and you would see that the wii is closer to the 360 in terms of rpgs than the ps3, discounting FFXIII, since its on both platforms. The wii's support will just increase more and more along with its install base. Also in terms of consoles 360 is the main WRPG platform, but if you count pc then it loses that. I think we should wait longer to declare the winner of the generation. Right now the 360 is the jrpg console(excluding ds) of the year. |
You base it off of the fact that certain titles will go to the wii. Also any new IPs do NOT mean they are not big rpgs. Lost odyssey is just as good as any tales games and could easily have a sequal. Same goes with last remnant and other big IPs that will go to 360/ps3.
Also it may take lead in japanese rpgs, but you forget that 360 will have the edge in wrpg. Fable 2, mass effect and other games etc.

Of course that is why I said right now the 360 has a superior lineup, and also why I mentioned future games rather than current ones. But there are many new Jrpgs on the wii also, I just felt naming proven ones had more of an effect. Oh and I agree in terms of console the 360 has the best WRPG support, but I play most of my WRPGs on PC so I don't really care about that(:. Also about half of those titles can't go anywhere else but the wii, because they are either 1st party, or it makes the most sense( Dragon Quest VIII had almost 3/4th of its sales from japan)
I personally think that the whole RPG business does not matter that much to the standard console gamer. There are only a few really big RPG's like FF that are multimillion sellers but i expect most of them to follow ff13 now and go multiplatform.
Many of the here listed JRPGs will probably be happy if they ever reach 1 million lifetime. It will be especially hard for the xbox 360 based ones since they are probably loosing out on japan sales. For the WRPGs i guess Fable 2 will be a big seller, not completely sure on Fallout yet while i liked the old games they were not that big sellers and the one is more action based so i personally am not sure how good it will sell.
I think the big unknown factor in this gen will be the MMORPGs on consoles, we have Age of Conan and Champions Online that are fixed for Xbox 360, and The Agency and DC Comics Online on PS3. In the last gen we only had Everquest Online Adventures and FFXI that were MMORPGs and i think while sales overall were probably ok, they both did not get anywhere near the size of WOW. it will be interesting if there will be a big MMO on consoles this generation, cause this time they have the advantage that more people are already used to playing online on their consoles.
| joseph21 said: no, the undisputed king is the ps2. and 80%+ of the RPG on the xbox are just timed exclusives. |
If we go that far i'd call the SNES the undisputed king.
Everyone satisfied now?
| zexen_lowe said: I still can't be convinced that the 360 is the clear winner in the JRPG department. It may have a slight advantage, but nothing I've seen points to the 360 as THE platform for JRPGs. Let's take a look (I'll left out bad raten games like Enchanted Arms or Operation Darkness): |
I know it probably herecy but I'll add the Wii RPG's:
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the new World
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Fragile
Little King's Story
Rune Factory: Frontier
Oboro Muramasa Youtoden
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Tales of ????
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI (PS2)
Shiren the Wanderer 3
Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon
That's quite some support.... Yes, it misses the big SquareEnix games, but the other companies are very much focussing on Wii for RPG development. Where in the past all an RPG fan needed was a PS2, now you need Wii60 or PS3 to enjoy all the good stuff that is released.
Edit: Except for one these are all Wii exclusives. So as far as exclusive RPG's go Wii is already the undisputed winner and that will only increase as Square can't afford it to don't have major Wii support.

Err
Lost odyssey
blue dragon
zoid 3 or whatever
spectral force
darkness or whatever
star ocean 4
infinite undiscovery
tales of vesperia
cry on
now the multi with ps3, but remember you can count them because they will NOT appear on the wii. Which means you can add them on list for against wii
FF 13
Last remnant
Eternal sonota
enchanted arms.
it still has the edge for now.. tho i see wii taking over because it will have more smaller projects, but all big projects are on 360/ps3
edit: also werent lost odyssey and blue dragon confirmed to be getting sequals? At least blue dragon

@Bingoo The wii will have the Main Series Tales, Most definately the next dragon quest(after IX), and I think there is a good chance Kingdom hearts. So that is pretty big. Not to mention big nintendo rpgs, and tons of smaller ones. Also bengabenga didn't tell you all the games. http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=33737
Edit: By big do you mean saleswise or quality?

if ff13 is going multiplatform you really think kh3 a nomura title, a impressive japanese mind like kojima will not made it on HD system too?.
versus the kh group title is a ff13 exclusive, considering the engine development its more likely they are sticking to ff13v engine to work on their next big project.
and considering multiplatform it's the way square wants to go.
