Forums - Microsoft - Now that this is over, what does FFXIII acutally mean for MS?

I just like how "FF isn't declining its a major exclusive that will boost the PS3" turned so quickly into "to my surprise, FFXII only sold 5 million."

Nothing, they wasted money to please some M$ fans. =)

FFXIII will do most of it`s sales on PS3,
maybe 1-2 mln. x360 owners have now ONE less reason to buy ps3, but eventually they will buy PS3.
PS3 is a MUST HAVE console THIS gen.

What money, they didn't give Square anything. SE came to them. FFXIII is well over budget and they actually want to break at least break even on the game.

I thought I heard that Microsoft paid the fine for SE breaking the exclusivity agreement with Sony.

It means people looking to buy a console have more reason to a 360 over a ps3. The 360 is cheaper, it has most of the ps3 exclusive games on it but the ps3 has none of the 360.

you mean like Heavenly Sword, God of War, Warhawk, Uncharted, Resistance, Resistance 2, Ratchet&Clank:Tools of destruction, Ratchet&Clank: Age of Booty, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and hit series like Jak&Daxter, Sly Cooper, and SoCom.  And upcoming games such as DC Universe, InFamous, M.A.G., and LittleBigPlanet Oh when did this happen?

I can't help but feel

Heavenly sword is meh and forgotten. Resistance is nothing special, the 360 is king of fps. Jak&Daxter Sly Cooper are not my thing, maybe for the under 12's. None of these games are the type that pushes people to buy a system.

The only exclusive that may push people to buy a ps3 is GT5, which is now looking like 2010 at best. But having said that its just one racing game and 360 is no slouch in the racing game department either.

-UBISOFT BOYCOTT!-

Many people are saying now that the 360 is the choice for JRPG'S, cause of this move by SE. Is this really true?

Well, maybe this year, but u all do realize that Sony is a Japanese company and they are getting many JRPG's that won't be on the 360.

Funny thing.. these fanboy wars.

FF XIII means a long two year wait before FF XIII arrives on European and North American shores. FF XIII will arrive on the PS3 in Japan in 12 months.

It's more about boosting 360 image and getting strong recognition in another genre IMHO that anything else.

I doubt it will drive a lot of 360 console sales, but it will probably drive some small spikes in US and Others.

SE will benefit in terms of additional sales in US / Others to 360 owners who would want the game but won't want to buy another console just for it.

No 360 in Japan is surprising, though, as it means that PS3 will get the big boost there (and that unless US suddenly goes crazy for FF the PS3 WW sales will be way larger than 360 for the game) and 360 will not gain much ground with local jRPG players.

I think this element indicates that MS (as they hinted themselves) are no longer going to try too hard in Japan anymore this gen. The likely returns are too small and they have obviously decided to focus on getting as much market share in US and Others as possible instead.

So its good for MS but it's not going to be monumental. In fact I still think that in terms of pure HW sales linked to the game the PS3 will benefit way more when the game drops in Japan exclusively on that console.

I guess the lack of 360 in Japan shows SE trying to balance the move. Applying the same logic of larger 360 install base in US/Others to Japan allows them to politely tell MS that their install base in Japan is too low to offer game there, allowing them to somewhat placate Sony that they won't lose benefits in Japan.

Overall though the game is just to damn far away right now. I'm sure in 1 month this news will have zero impact and it will all be about the games actually releasing (GoW2, RFOM2, etc) and what sales they drive.

The ironic thing is that by the time FF ships the very market as it exists now will have changed (perhaps a lot due to December 2008) and any assumptions we make now will go out the window.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Nothing MS just wanted to stick a needle in the eye of a helpless FF fan.. :P

I think the biggest impact of the switch to multiplatform will be seen in the lack of a PS3 boost in the West, rather than a large Xbox 360 boost.

Given Microsoft is able to obtain exclusives (timed or otherwise) for Western games such as Bioshock or Mass Effect quite easily, their ability to do so will be enhanced if they maintain or even move to extend their lead in the West over the Sony console.

well ,, ur thread is based on the fact that ff12 didn't sell very good,
but you forgot the fact that ff13 is in a different generation and i think this one will be an epic game,
MS is trying to build a strong library of games and they did,,
keeping ff PS3 exclusive would've hurt MS more than it would've done good to ps3,,
buying an xbox is really great for any gamer now more than before

@misteromar MK4

U sound like FF13 is exclusive to M$.

So, u are saying that the 360 has better games then the PS3 and better comming too. That the 360 has more exclusives and there are very litttle reasons for someone to get a PS3?- utter CRAP!

1. The PS3 will come down in price, so this will not be a factor.
2. The 360 DOES not have most of the PS3's exclusives [how does this make sence?- exclusives means exclusives]
3. Nearly all the 360's exclusives are found on PC and very little of the PS3's are. So, are the 360's exclusives really exclusives?
4. There are killer games comming to the PS3; FF13 ver, White Knight Story, New ICO and/or Shadow Of The Colosus, MAG, KZ2, R2, BioShock, BioShock 2, GT5, GoW3, LBP, Fat Princess, The Agency, Uncharted 2, Jack & Dextar, DCU, RockStar's new secret PS3 exclusive, New JRPG from Gamers Republic, Dark Cloud 3, ShinmegumiTensai, etc, etc.
4. IMO, the PS3 is a much better Multimedia ceter and does more, have u heard of BR?
5. The PS3 has more casual gamer games.

mmm.
