I said this in my other thread but I'll say it again here:

How is it that no game even comes close to using 80% of the PS3's SPU's yet MAG is already pushing the PS3 to its limits? I don't know, this just doesn't seem exciting yet and seems like they're just going for quantity over quality to me. I seem to remember saying KZ2 was going to push the PS3 to its limits and I guess it's not even close to 80% of its power now.

Personally, I think this game is a mixture of all talk/hype and just impressing people with huge numbers.

your a dev.. devs always talk about pushing limits. I think they are meaning pushing limits of current knowledge of the console.

True, but I'm just talking about how a year ago KZ2 was pushing the PS3 to its limit but now it's not even using 80% of the PS3's SPU's. This year MAG is pushing the hardware to its limit but next year is it only going to be using 80% of the SPU's too?

Just watched the conference and no one said anything about Killzone only tapping into 80% of the PS3's power. One 3rd Party dev (I believe someone from 2K Marin) said they hadn't hit 80% and were suspecting that no one else has hit 80%. Stop trying to make it sound like Sony has said these things.

Somewhere in the beginning they mention no game (even ones in development I believe) has even come close to utilizing 80% of the SPU's.  Killzone 2 is a PS3 game so it falls under that net.

And I think it's pretty clear that Zipper doesn't intend anyone to organize 256 people. (Why would one single person be organizing both teams anyway??? ;) ) There's 8 person squads for a very good reason. Most likely each squad will have a very specific objective (something like "sneak behind enemy lines" or "blow up anti-aircraft launchers"), while the over-arching mission could be something as simple as "defeat the red enemy." Penalty for not completing your squad's mission within a certain time limit could mean your squad is booted from the game and you have to move on to a new battle while all the other squads continue to fight it out through their little objectives.

It's really not that difficult to see how this works. I came up with all that in 5 minutes. I'm sure an accomplished developer could do much better.

You'd better hope it's not like that.  If each 8 person squad is given a vital objective, what happens when your team can't progress because there's a squad of retards that are running around in circles TKing each other, or staring at walls afk?   There would have to be a way for squads that have completed their objective to be able to take on uncompleted objectives to aid other squads.

Look at Enemy Territory - I can't tell you how often it would just be me and one other person completing ALL the objectives from start to finish - building structures, driving MCP, setting up bombs etc, while the rest of the team is running around shooting things and completely not paying attention to actually winning.  And that's just with 16-32 players on pc :(   I can't imagine the level of retardation we will see with 256

Sony's conference just ended with the announcement of this new tittle for the ps3.

MAG will be an online shooter, 256 people online, 8 man squadrons, great graphics etc.

In my opinion, this is looking like a game with lots of potential. Lets see what they can do with it.

What do you think?

I would say it sounds great on paper and everything.  Not even a FPS fan but I still can feel the excitement and hope it is great for everyone that wants it.

But like all new games being shown on PS3 and 360 usually for the first time.  I F*ing hate when they just show some damn CG movie.  I really wish they would have shown some montage of the game being played by their dev team (however big that is, probably less than 256)

Not like Nintendo showing faces and then pushing buttons on controler or anything.  But you know clips of a guy running around in game giving orders ect.  CG movies are pointless.

Also no matter what he says about pushing the PS3 to its limits that is not what matter. What is the biggest worry about this game is pushing PSN to its limits.

They are gonna have to have like a server dedicated to each 256 lobby or whatever to make it not laggy running around with that many users.

For this game to stand any chance of success it needs a computer AI component that assigns objectives to the players on the fly. For more organised clan matches you could have a commander that plays it like an rts and assigns waypoints etc but lets be honest in a pub people are stupid and having a human commander just wouldn't be very viable on that scale.

I really enjoy, and still play, Battlefield 2. Having 32 vs 32 player teams can be crazy and hectic.

Obviously things I'm worried about would be spamming (ie throwing grenades like mad), spawn killing, team killing, ect.

Despite that, some of the best moments I've had in Battlefield 2 happen when there is tons of stuff going on and I'm taking out enemies, supporting the team, and capping control points. While all that's going on, tanks are battling, planes are dropping bombs and assaulting the control points, choppers are taking out tanks and dropping off squads, and artillary barrages are decimating the area around me.

While we don't know a whole lot about Mag, I'm really eager to get more information from my experiences with Battlefield 2. Heck, it'd be really nice if a Battlefield 3 was officially announced lol.

If it can surpass this game then it is something! This has been in development for the 360 since E3 2005.

Some features:

  • Currently, the game is planned to launch with two major cities (one for each faction) and eight smaller cities, along with about 80 battlefields, each of which can house up to 200 players at once.

  • The developers at Webzen plan to encourage players to play together by letting them form small squads of up to four players each, larger platoons with five squads each, and finally, companies, which include five platoons (with a total of up to 100 players in each).

  • Apparently, battlefields where players fight against the monstrous hybrids will allow up to 64 players at once, while competitive battlefields will allow up to 200.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

MAG reminded me of End War. I think 256 players would be a lot of fun. The best Warhawk battles are the 32 player on Archipelago. I'm not going to fall for the hype but it is promising. At least Sony is trying to take console gaming in a new direction.

ssj12 - When does the NDA expire? Was it Versus? Do you know anything about the BBC game? I need some answers.

I think he said something about ff, if i am not mistaken. The big question is, is it versus or something new?

he also mentioned an ico project for tgs.

actually no, the game I was talking about is a FF game. =P

Is that supposed to be Gears of Battlefield?
