Forums - Sony - New 80GB "Core" PS3 in September for 399 - No BC

I found it odd that he said they were 'announcing an 80GB model with all the same features as the 40GB.'

What does the 40GB have that the 60/80GB models didn't have?  Nothing that I am aware of.

i guess they are really aiming for pure software emulation for bc sometime in the future. But i don't think they will announce it before they are sure they can get it running good enough to have a release date for it.

I really hope my 60gb holds out for the rest of this generation.

"Why do they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away"

Well yeah, Sony is unpredictable.

This model has nothing to do with the current 80 GB model.
I can't understand all the people who say that the reason for why the 80 GB sold better than the 40 GB is because of the BC.
I agree, that is true. But when they upgrade the PS3 to have double the harddrive space for no extra cost, how will it not be a good thing? I can understand that people want BC, I do too, but they are not going to bring back hardware BC.
It's not the current 80 GB model that has been downgraded, it's the 40 GB model that has been upgraded.

The cost difference between a 40 gig HD and an 80 gig HD is.... $4.

What this means is backward compatibility has become buy a PS2 and a PS3.  And when the 40 gig, launched you at least got Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray (approximately $20 value).  So this isn't there best deal.  This is confirmation they are taking options away from consumers.  And a $4 upgrade, which won't matter for people that are not hardcore and will not be enough space for those that are.

If you want bc run to the store and buy a 80 gig.

80gb drives are probably produced in much larger volumes so the OEM cost may even be cheaper.

How do you all know that the 80 gig with BC is disappearing? All what they said is that there will be a 80GB with the same features as the 40 GB.

I think the 40GB had a different fan/heatsink setup.  Variable speed or whatever.  I think it also uses less power.  Can't be positive though.

It also had two less USB, no BC and no card readers...
