No, it's just the best selling.

Off The Wall was better in my opinion.

It was the best selling.  Now its the Eagles Greatest Hits.

Really? Didn't know that. Got a link?

QFT.

Thriller's a good album, but not as good as sales and popular publictions would have you believe (of course, there's almost zero correlation between how well and album sells and how good it is--yes, I'm looking at you, Eagles). Rolling Stone, in rating it that high, shows their general tendency towards the more mainstream opinion. And no, they're not rock oriented at all--just popular music oriented.

The greatest albums of all time, in my mind, would comprise some of the following (this isn't at all a favorite albums list, though some are favorites, sure), in general (not exact) chronological order:

  • Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
  • Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
  • John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
  • Ornette Colemen - Ornette!
  • The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  • The Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
  • The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
  • The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
  • The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
  • Bob Marley - Exodus
  • Sly and the Family Stone - Stand!
  • Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
  • Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
  • Led Zeppelin - IV
  • Brian Eno - Another Green World
  • Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express
  • David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
  • David Bowie - Low
  • The Clash - London Calling
  • Gang of Four - Entertainment!
  • Talking Heads - Remain in Light
  • Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
  • Pixies - Surfer Rosa
  • Pixies - Doolittle
  • Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
  • NWA - Straight Outta Compton
  • Nirvana - Nevermind
  • Nas - Illmatic
  • The Notorius B.I.G. - Ready to Die
  • Radiohead - OK Computer
  • Radiohead - Kid A
  • Nuetral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
  • Jay-Z - The Blueprint
  • Outkast - Stankonia

All of these albums pushed the boundaries of music in some way or another, and were incredibly important in their repsective genres. Off the Wall and, to a lesser extent, Thriller did that as well, but I wouldn't place either of them on the above list. Though Off the Wall might be close.

This list also slights a few generes that were heavily single based (Soul, Funk, Punk, old school country, Reggae, Disco), but that;s the nature of album lists. There's also most likely deserving albums made post 2001, which is the year The Blueprint and Stonkonia came out, but it's too early to make a call on those. One such likely future entrant might be M.I.A - Kala.

Just my opinion as a massive music geek who used to have a radio show. God I miss that.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

It is a fantastic Album but why is this post under Gaming. It should be under Off Topic.
