Forums - Sales - Media Create Data: Japan 2008 First Half

Early this month, Media Create posted the video game softwares and hardwares sale numbers for the first half of 2008 in Japan. Don't know why, PS2 data is not included in this report. It's not surprising, the vieo game market in Japan is shrinking.

Total sales: 289.4 billion yen (87.80% of 2007#)

Software:
Total 28.41 million copies (88.25% of 2007 #); 153.5 billion yen (97.24% of 2007 #)

PS3 2.34 million copies (297.38%); 18 billion yen
PSP 4.75 million copies (164.86%); 22.3 billion yen
Wii 7.93 million copies (174.04%); 48.7 billion yen
DS 10.57 million copies (57.23%); 46.9 billion yen
Xbox360 0.28 million copies (87.02%); 2.1 billion yen

Hardware:
Total 6.34 million units (77.70% of 2007#); 135.9 billion yen (79.12% of 2007#)

PS3 0.55 million units (111.85%); 22.5 billion yen
PSP 2.14 million units (186.28%); 40.6 billion yen
Wii 1.70 million units (86.93%); 40.5 billion yen

Based on my calculation, if the rest of the sales goes to PS2
PS2 software: 2.54 million copies; 15.5 billion yen
PS2 hardware: 0.27 million units; 4 billion

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

Around the Network

Wow PSP is making a killing with consoles sold but is struggling to move games. Ds is where the money is though. 10.57 million games in 6 months.

The only reason the PSP is beating the DS this year in hardware is because everyone already has one. It outsold the PS2 in japan already. WW however Ds still outsell everything in a weekly bases.
