Ok, so we have these awesome reviews so far for FFIV, everybody loves it, despite great reviews all around, one review site disagrees.

RPGFan, ok, that's cool.

Still....look closer.

Look at the dates the reviews were submitted.

RPGFan submitted its review on 5/21/08, 2.5 months before the game was released, and that same amout of time before the next earliest review.

....ok, so lets examine the review a little more....

My ultimate beef with FFIV DS is that it doesn't really work as a remake or a reissue. It doesn't work as a reissue since stylistically it's trying to do something very different from the SNES version, and it's not very successful aside from the voice work.

Gamespot said the voice work was the only negative about the game....but ok. Also...a graphics criticism.

It doesn't work as a remake since the there are precious few changes and the game has not aged as well as many other SNES rpgs.

Besides the graphics, he means, anyway....contradiction.

Is FFIV really just that amazing? I don't think so. What it has going for it is the same thing as VII, in that it struck a chord with a segment of dedicated fans who will always swear by its classic story and gameplay. While Final Fantasy IV was a solid early SNES RPG, I can rattle off two dozen better fourth generation RPGs with little effort.

Idiot.

Considering this game's history and how boring it was for me to play through it again, I wanted to give the game a 60%. I just couldn't see any merit to re-releasing it given its archaic battle system, myriad of other versions, and essentially unchanged gameplay

Idiot.

Ok, let me say this, I just read the whole review 3 times. There is no information about the actual game in it whatsoever. I know more about this game from reading any preview from any website on the internet then this site offers up. He mentiones the ability system in vague passing. Again, there is no information about the game.

For a seventeen year-old game, Final Fantasy IV has a decent story.

Idiot.

Basically, I believe that either this man played the Japanese version briefly, or didn't even play this at all. He assumed the game would be passed over as another remake without much thought given to its reviews, but when everyone else has ranked the game with AAA status, the exception being IGN with an 87, his review stands out, and unfortuantely it doesnt' hold up. It is terrible with no information about the game...

...instead he chooses to wax sentimental bout the FF series and how remakes shouldn't be done, and how crappy random battles are, and how revolutionary FFXII and XIII will be for the genre.

Am I the only person who thinks this review is a complete and utter sham, all fanboyism aside here, or is it just me...honestly, tell me, cause I'm about to send this "reviewer" an email telling him that if he goes through the trouble of actually playing the game, maybe next time he could do use the favor and actually write a few lines to describe it for his readers, instead of telling us how bad FFVII sucks, because that's totally on subject.....This review is garbage. I know they don't pay this guy, but jeez, some journalistic integrity, please.

Control

No real complaints here. The game plays like the original; there aren't any camera issues or awkward configurations. You can use the stylus to move your character around and there are some added minigames that make use of it. That's all I have to say about that.

An accomplished writer, obviously.

the dates don't correspond with the actual review. It's like that for all games. For example, Siren: Blood Curse (randomly selected game) says that they were reviewed back in May and there is no score. http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages4/936034.asp

I think you're wrong, but in any case, the date written in the actual title of the review is 05/21/08

So it is the date of the actual review. Queue up sinister music.

It is weird. I mean the battle system isn't anymore archaec then 5-10 really.

I'm too tired to read that entire thing - but I don't believe I had to after I saw the date on the RPGFan review. Oh well - I figure the review was just diluded fanaticism and random comparisons using anecdote after anecdote and replacing the values of the games with his values.

That's how most reviews are though - so nothing new.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

That review is poorly written. RPGFan need to take that review down and force the reviewer to make a new and better written review for the game and make sure he/she beats the game to completion.

Yeah man, this review is very strange, and some questions need to be answered, like how he reviewed the game on 05/21/08, or why he gave the story a 78, or the graphics a 70, when gamespot says it has the best graphics on the ds.

well it says on his own site that the review is from 5/08 not just gamerankings. He obviously played the japanese version if he thought the voice acting was good. I mean it sounds like he didn't like the original, so i can't really keep following the review after that point.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

why do you even care? Just play the damn game. It's not nintendo or over hyper shooter, so don't expect high reviews.

I have the japanese version, and disagree with everything in that. I already knew the story since I've played the snes version(first FF) and it aged very well. ALot better than the crap is VII,VIII(sorry souriku and other XIII fans, and especially XII). I would love to see them name a dozen rpgs of the top of their head better than FFIV. Even if they did, their were so many rpgs back then that would be a complement to be the 13th best.
