The first two RPGs I ever played were Chrono Trigger and SMRPG.
That is why I could not make it through FFII/FFIII. They didn't compare.

(No random battles in CT. I don't remember any in SMRPG either.)
I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |
Super Mario RPG 2 can happen.
But right now it remains in the fans' dreams (including mine)
O-D-C,
I have to disagree with you. I believe that classics should be ported/remade for new gamers to enjoy. It does not make the game less special. What it does is make new fans of the game and could consequently make Square think about relaunching the Chrono series.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
I may be wrong about this but i thought that the paper mario series is what happened to the mario rpg scene.
"Like you know"
Paper Mario was done because Square abandoned Nintendo completely after Nintendo didn't listen to...just about everyone and went for cartridges for the N64. Square took FFVII to the Playstation and was Sony only until Chocobo Dungeon in 2002. Since Nintendo didn't have Square to help anymore they went to the semi OK Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario series. Their attempts at emulating SMRPG just don't compare though. Nintendo has never made a decent RPG game (it seems to be a very very hard thing to do considering how many companies have had a hard time doing a good job on an RPG) and really could use Squares expertise again.
I heard a rumor of a SMRPG for the DS, that would be a HUGE mistake, SMRPG needs a proper console sequel not some rehash on a portable system. The action sequences and map interaction that made SMRPG so interesting would almost certainly translate well to the Wii.
