Forums - Sales - duck hunt highest selling FPS?

@ tabsina )

exactly,

the name of the genre isn't all there has to be for a game to be a FPS, just like not all games in which you play a role are RPGs (in that case all story games would be RPGs, which isn't true) and not every game in which you play real-time and with a strategy is a RTS-game

But still technically it is. Instead of saying that the game that fits the name is incorrect, maybe it's time to say that our stereotypes are false. Hmm didn't think of that did ya.

@ Zucas )

the genre name was created for a revolutionary game which defined this genre (because it didn't quite fit to former genres) and not the other way round, which is why your approach is bullshit

if the name of the genre is too little information for a distinction of games, then just look at the games which defined the genres and you have a clear definition of what fits to the genre and what doesn't

the reason nintendo is a better company is the variety of hit games they have, their ability to please the market, their ability to sell their product, their ability to make a game that awes the world and the overall greatness of everything they make.

Well, in all honesty, I think of the big three, Nintendo is the best company. But I am not in the market to buy a company, I really just want to buy games. Nintendo has yet to make a game I enjoyed playing... ever.

So, for my gaming needs, Nintendo would not be the "better" choice.

you have not enjoyed playing a single nintendo game? out of all the mario, zelda, metroid, kirby, donkey kong, SOOOOOOO many more. you mean to tell me you havent enjoyed 1?!

I enjoyed Donky Kong in the arcade, and I did like the first Mario game on the NES. I would play it at my sisters because there was nothing else to play, I have owned both an NES, and a SNES, but all the games I liked on it were not made by Nintedo. I played PC games back then most of the time.

Oh, wait, I really liked one. Meteoroid on the NES.

Edit: I own a Wii, and SMG. Not a fan (got bored half way though), and I have WiiFit. No other games, and nothing coming out that looks interesting.

This thread went downhill quickly, but I think there was a good discussion to have here.

Duck Hunt is a good reminder that some types of gameplay are older than we think. Lightgun shooters harken back to shooting games at carnivals or fairs.

And the fundamental action in the game is the same as in FPS games. FPSs are no different than paintball or laser tag in real life; both games that predate FPSs as videogames.

All these games play to the same kind of desire, mostly among men, to test our skills as marksmen and hunters. In the case of Duck Hunt, it is brought back to a less taboo and less violent level which opens up the audience for the game, but there were also NES lightgun games like Wild Gunman or Hogan's Alley where you shot the bad guys. There were also 2D side-scrolling shooters like Contra which had the ridiculous action-movie macho feel of modern FPSs, and before that the space shooters like Space Invaders. And those date back to one of the first notable games ever made, Spacewar! from 1962.

The point is not that Duck Hunt is the best-selling FPS of all time, since it was packed-in and doesn't fit the common definition of FPS. But the point is that games like our modern shooters have been around and have been very popular for a very long time.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Highest casual FPS.  After all, you don't even have to control the shooter's movements.  What could be more casual than that?

And if you could shoot the damn dog, why that would bring in the casual GTA crowd as well!!

(Okay, a small percentage of them that like to shoot things that irk them!)

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

Haha your funny.  So Duck Hunt isn't a first person shooter.  Then what is it.  And don't say light gun shooter, because all light gun shooters are first person shooters.  Seriously you got anything to back up what you say.  What I thought.

You cant see the gun.. so no fps..

FPS is a sub genre of shooters just like Light gun shooters and on rail shooter..

the term came to define a more specific type of game with a first-person view, where the main character's gun and part of his/her hand is shown, almost always centered around the act of aiming and shooting hand-held weapons, usually with limited ammunition.

The focus is generally on the aiming of one's own guns and the avoidance of enemy attacks, but the player is given more control over their movement than in on-rails shooters and most light gun games.he term came to define a more specific type of game with a first-person view, where the main character's gun and part of his/her hand is shown, almost always centered around the act of aiming and shooting hand-held weapons, usually with limited ammunition.
