The advantage is space... a LOT of space. DVD is 9 gig, they have 400 gig BD's in development.

Yes but what is the benefit of that space?

All A CD/DVD/BD is, is a storage medium. If you see that there was a reason to go 13x in storage capacity to go from CD to DVD, then why don't you see there is a reason to go 44x from DVD to 400 Gig BD?

If I could get a season of Lost on one disk for the same price, I would love that. That's worth it to me right there (plus it's worth it to them, as it's cheaper manufacturing, packaging, and shipping).

1. Blu-Ray isn't at 400GB yet. The discs won't be complatible with the PS3 (look up the stories for that). So that advantage isn't there.

2. Yet it's highly unlikely they would every be sold for that cheap.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Umm, Sony made nothing off of the DVD standard. They will make ALOT of money off of BR.

@Onimusha - your kidding right? I mean if you have an HDTV, it's a no brainer to get BR. It looks amazing. This Christmas should be HUGE for HDTVs and the PS3. I think it will outsell the 360 in all regions.

BR is about the only thing Sony has done right so far this gen.

So all in all, the most you can say for Blu-Ray is that it is pretty, which I fail to see how such a claim was in contrast to my allegations of its contributions being superficial and those of a luxury item.

DVD
- Shows improved picture and sound over that of VHS on any TV.
- Was a non-degradeable format unlike VHS.
- Allowed for easy navigation thus eliminating the inconvenience of Rewinding or aimless fast forwarding.
- Allowed for extra content and disc menus which were impossible on VHS.

Blu-Ray
- Shows improved picture and sound over that of DVD noticeably only on expensive HD TVs.
- Has more space than a DVD for reasons yet to be realized.

Somehow the leap from one format to the next is less impressive for Blu-Ray as oppossed to DVD's emergence as the replacement for VHS. Blu-Ray's improvements are fairly superficial and vain, while not bad improvements they don't really beckon the notion we've become familiar with as being a true step forward in formats.

HDTVs are not necessarily a luxury item any more. At least where I live you can get a decent HDTV for a fairly cheap price, so while I agree blu-ray is still a "luxury" item, I think it is closer to becoming standard then you think.

Even if that were true it doesn't take away from how superficial the improvement (step forward) as a whole is for Blu-Ray in comparison to what DVD did in going beyond VHS.

1, 400GB discs might not beable to but it should be possible that the PS3 to read a 75GB or 100GB discn without issues.

2. And the Wii will never receive a price cut, ever.

Blu-ray has way more features then what was listed. BD-Live for example, interactive movies ie scenes from another prospective, more space for extras, more games.

?? S-VHS is 560x480. DVD is 720x480. BD is 1920x1080.

HD-DVD/BD is a much bigger jump over DVD then DVD is over S-VHS. The problem is TV's are not at a point where you see it.

That's not a reason to not start the technology now.

That is but one technical aspect and not the point as a whole I was adressing.

Look at the list I made above. The sheer number of improvements DVD offered over VHS warranted the format leap, it wasn't just technically better, it was more convenient and economical.

@ SSJ12

BD-Live and interactive movies are just novetly improvements, luxuries, they're not the leap forward that DVD was to VHS.

CD made a better format

DVD made a better format

Blu-Ray just made a better DVD

well unfortunately electron based storage isnt perfected or cheap so Blu-ray was the only logical step forward. What did you expect us to jump 20 years in technology for the storage medium?

Just purely out of curiosity, would you feel differently if both the Wii and the PS3 had built-in Blu-ray?

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it
