the 360 has far surpassed the XBOX in terms of reputation and number of high quality games, the 360 is also selling well at the moment (in so much as it should surpass the sales of the XBOX by a long way) which makes an early release for XBOX 720 a big gamble for MS.

 

The Xbox360 is barely outselling the original at this point of time, I doubt lifetime sales will be more than a few million extra, somewhere around 30 million.

The released the Xbox in like what 2001? They released X360 in 2005? So a new one in 2009 would be strange?

I think an announcement comes ~E3 2009.

Then we see the Xbox 720 in Nov 2010.

I think 360 will still sell 5-10 million after the successor console is launched, it won't be as violent a transition as from Xbox to Xbox 360.

I'm betting that project Phoenix was most likely started in early 2006 or so. That doesn't mean we'll see anything out of it any time soon though.
