Forums - Gaming - Do you agree, it'll take a lot more than $50 price drop for 360 to win?

Who cares, Microsoft has already solidified the xbox brand name. Like Dirty P said they've gained enough market share to keep movin on up from here on out. Face it folk Microsoft is here to stay, especially if they keep coming out with bomb ass games.

Well, they solidified that they make lousy hardware.  The quality issues are going to follow the xbox brand into the next generation.

As stated by an earlier poster, Sony FINALLY got it right this gen. Last gen, the PS2 had DRE - disk read errors left and right and it still sold like 125M. Games sell consoles. And folks will buy a console even if it's a POC if it has cherry games.

What, son, what? New York, New York!!!

what
?
i wouldn't touch a xbox360 even with a 100ft pole.
and thanks to RRoD.
a 50$ will help them in the US (i don't have much faith in them, they got george bush as their president anyway)

but in europe, japan, will always be dominated by the whole nintendo and sony consoles.

How some of the people who post on here expect to be taken seriously is beyond me. Read Joseph21's post for an example of such a person.

I agree with some of the posters on here that say the definition of "win" is subjective. Does winning mean surpassing the Wii or staying ahead of the PS3? Does it mean having a healthy share of the market and achieving profitability? If it is the latter, which I believe is the definition of "win" for MS, then I would postulate that they have already achieved that.

What? 360 has already won. There is no way that wii or even ps3 will ever catch up 360. Of course I am talking about good games, since that is the only thing which matters to gamers. I could not really care less if all the shovelware/casual games goes to wii or ps3. :)

MS will not sell the most hardware but it has shown that it def belongs in the console industry with its strong IPs as well as excellent online. Every company has problems with hardware. As posted by someone earlier 120 PS2s  sold even with the rampant DREs including mine :( There should be quite a few ppl warned if not banned that have posted in this thread.

Consoles Owned: Sega Genesis, NES, PS2 (RIP) N64, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii

The mistake you make is assuming that its a zero sum game. Every single one of the console manufacturers can "win" if they have the best business model. Nintendo showed that last gen where they still made a lot of money even though they weren't the market leader. MS's entertainment division has been profitable for 3 quarters in a row and its looking like it will be profitable this quarter as-well. Microsoft were very wise not to drop the price very often as A they aren't having the problem that sony is having with their shareholders/upper management and B they're now profitable.

A price cut in NA will have more impact then the price cut in Europe did (and it was a success as average sales are up week on week significantly). The NA pricecut will be more effective because the 360 is a stronger brand in NA then it is in Europe. It wont make the 360 "win" as the wii will retain its market lead but what it will do is stimulate demand that should hopefully flow onto the holidays season where the seasonal sales increase and the great games being released will carry the 360 for the rest of the year.

The 50 dollar cut of last year increased a bit the sales for a month or so ,but the sales of this year have been pretty much the same as last year prior the cut.The massive cut in Europe (120 euros so 180 dollars) boosted a bit the sales for some weeks but its returning slowly to the previous level.

X360 with its PC games and the online fees is a too hardcore console, and it has very difficult to expand to really big markets. The price cuts help a bit but wont win the day.THe PS3 ,on the other hand ,more than doubled its sales on a continued base with its price drop and when it drops again it will manage something similar.

you are entitled to your opinion but at least don't tell lies:

  1. the price cut was 80€ not 120€: before price cut arcade model costed 279€ (now 199€) , PRO costed 349€ (now 269€) and elite costed 449€ (now 369€)
  2. the price drop gave a permanent 30%+ boost in EU/Others in 2008 ALONE (this should prevent you from using the argument: "in 2008 EU/others market increased its size"): before price cut the x360 was selling like 45-50k consoles per week...after the price cut sold AT LEAST 65k pieces per week (and 65k consoles is just a thing of June: the beginning of the "slowest" time of the year in terms of console sales)
  3. (since you made a comparison 2007 vs 2008) last year x360 in march was selling 35k per week...in 2008 after the price cut it was like a steady 70-90k per week ( plus 80/100% in march/april/may year over year)...in june the increase year over year is even bigger (june 2007: 25-20k; june 2008: 75-65k)

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M
