Forums - Sony - Why has the PS3 outsold the 360 by almost 1.5 million units this year?

When is the PS3 going to stop losing money? That's what Sony's investors want to know...because it's looking like 2010 before they stand any chance.

Once the SOFTWARE line-up started picking up, even if it's not ahead in quantity compared to the 360, quality is a personal preference. And when I look at SONY's line-up from Oct 07 - March 09, and then look at the 360's, IMO SONY has more publically appealing games. And lets not forget the public image of both brand names and thier games toward the general consumer market.

Maybe next week? Maybe now? The ps3's manufacturing price was said to be 400 earlier this year, we don't know if it shrunk or not now do we?? 2010 seems like BS to me. SCE is profiting right now, if not from the ps3 then they are not losing much from it now, and they are  getting money from software, psp, and the ps2 [which does occasionally beat 360 from time to time].

And also who knows what M$'s profit/loss from the 360 is yet.... Anyone???

-$3 billion from xbox

-$2.5 billion from xbox 360

that sound about right?

and heruamon, the ps3 may be losing money, but it also helped Sony make money in other places.  It helped win the "high def war" which will mean continues sales of blu ray players and blu ray movies that Sony makes and for the studios Sony owns.  Also, you have to have a high def tv to watch those and Sony sells those also.  Also, you can't take advantage of 7.1 surround sound without the extra speakers and, guess what, Sony sells that also.  So the ps3 may be losing money now, but it helping Sony make money in other places and the ps3 will make money in the furture.

Thanks, I think this shows my point quite well.

And I was thinking abuot mentionning that but it pretty much spoke for it self to any one who thought about it. Sony do more than just consoles and games.

with big games like gt5p, and mgs4 including the price drop and blu ray winning the war. the ps3 is a good investment brand name and durability is everything.

America also. 360 hasn't been consistently outselling the PS3. According to NPD data, for every month but one the PS3 sold better than the 360.

Your argument still rings hollow. Microsoft has done the exact same thing with the 360 as they did with the original XBOX, the only noteworthy difference being that Sony didn't have the limelight already this time around (meaning it worked a bit better). But buying support still hasn't helped them overcome their market cap; the 360 is still basically the same as the PS3 save in terms of a handful of very genre-specific titles.

The system's lack of a meaningful selling point to differentiate itself sufficiently from its competition is why it's approaching market saturation. Every last feature on it can be found on another console in some form, and every last game on it has an analogous game (if not the exact same game) on another system. Price drops are not going to change this fact; at best, they will bring a handful of people still on the fence over to the 360 camp, but even then, they're only nabbing people from the same crowd they nabbed people from with the original XBOX. Who do they draw from when everybody who's even willing to consider the purchase of a 360 has made up their mind?

There's not much for me to respond here because you're essentially going on your opinion of the 360 feature set being the same on other consoles and purchased exclusives / additional third party support being 'irrelevant'.  You're also assuming that people who own one console will not want a 360 regardless of price.

Who will purchase a 360 when they've already made up their mind?  Many PS3 owners will, once the price drops enough. After all, my first console purchase last gen was a ps2, and when I got an amazing deal on a used xbox, I snatched it up quick, entirely based on price / handful of exclusives.  The same holds true for the ps3 - whenever it hits mainstream price levels, many x360 owners will want to pick one up for exclusives they missed and because it's cheap enough (like me).

The 360 has much, much stronger software than the original xbox did, they're going to have leeway for price adjustments all the way to mainstream levels (they learned their lesson from the nvidia fiasco), and they are going to continue support and production for years to come.
