To add to Sky Render's list:

Throwing vegetables, which is now one of Peach's moves in Brawl.
The spark guy that rotates around the platform, which is an item in Brawl.
Quicksand and secrets hidden in the quicksand, which was in SMB3 later.

I first played this in Mario All-Stars for SNES like another poster said. When I start playing I was like "wtf", this is Mario, but it isn't Mario!!! Didn't really like the game much, and I don't think it was all that fun (just didn't have the Marimo-jo the other games had).

Anyone else hear they shipped this version to the U.S. because the Japanese version was thought to be too difficult?

Good game that introduced Shy Guys, Bob Ombs, and many other cool enemies. So this game definitely played an important role in the Mario Saga. Long Live Super Mario Bros 2.

I use to love this game. I tried to play as Toad the most because I always liked him in Super Mario Kart. I never played it as much as the others, not because I didn't like it but simply because there are better Mario games like SMB 3 and World

Ok, so I beat the game on the 13th I think. I don't think I was able to play on the 11th or 12th. So, I finally shoved the veggies up Wart's ass on the 13th once again.

Such a great game. My kids were cheering me on as it took 2 tries to beat that frog.

Virtual console is cool but I've been playing free roms on PC since the late 90's.

On topic: SMB 2 is my favorite of the NES Mario's and definitely in my top five overall. I loved the dirt digging sections. I really hope a 2D Mario implements them again.
