Forums - Sony - Killzone 2 all that it is hyped up to be?

@Mummelmann:

That's the difference between hyping the mainstream and hyping the graphics whores ;)

To really hype the mainstream about a FPS, you need all of those ridiculous extravaganzas used in Halo 3's campaign. To hype the graphics whores, it's much easier, just release a few videos/screenshots and they'll do the rest.

I remember reading in EGM before the first Killzone came out about how Killzone was going to be a "Halo killer." And as the reviews trickled out, we saw that Killzone was in no way a "Halo killer." I am postulating that KZ2 will not live up to the hype that it is generating.

By the way Mummelmann, I don't think the E3 2007 trailer is really on par with the target render. There's a comparison here:

Look at the explosions, fire, smoke and clouds... That's where the most obvious differences are.

I remember when the first Killzone came out. Being a big fan of FPS shooters it wasnt long before i had my hands on a copy. After playing through the game, I couldn't figure out what the brilliance about the game was. Having played several FPS's I felt a little let down if anything. Especially after the release of BLACK, which truly was groundbreaking given its release on last gen consoles.

The hype machine has now started again. Killzone2 is in the horizons and it is meant to be better then silicon found sun bathing on the hot exotic beaches.

Already since its demo shown years ago prior to the PS3 release, there has been huge doubt whether or not it will be this graphically brilliant game that wields the power to display graphics so good, the press were convinced it was CG rather then in game graphics.

Well what if the graphics are so great, will the gameplay be just as phenomenal? Gears of War is what it is today, not so much due to its graphics, but due to its new off the shoulder approach to FPS. Will Killzone2 bring anything new to the table or will it just be another over hyper best seller title such as Halo3. Polished to look extra good with not much new content but praised and loved by its fan boys.

Gears of war is a Shooter not a FPS.

Killzone 1 was not really hyped up as much as u'd like 2 belive

Also, there are now gameplay videos of killzone 2 not just trailers. The graphics look like its all CG so it's AMAZING!

Halo 3 polished it's first level and left the rest to look crappy. Play it again and you'll realise the detail in each of the levels drop as you get farther into the game.

NJ5, you keep saying 'they' tried to pass the target render off as in-game footage. GG made no such claim. That was a single, idiotic Sony PR guy (who later claimed he thought he was being asked about the Resistance footage, not the KZ2 footage), and then reviewers, bloggers, and the internet in general carried it on from there.

Isn't this a second-party title? As the publisher, Sony has as much responsibility for it as the developer does...

Furthermore, how long did it take for the news to come out that it wasn't in-game? If they corrected it soon after the video was released, I guess that does make up for the mistake (if it was a mistake).

Unless this game makes it into the top 5 games of ALL TIME on Metacritic, then no. It will not be all it is hyped up to be.

no one is hyping it that much. The most i've seen it hyped as was 90+% and probably the best looking game on consoles when it gets released

SONY is hyping it that much.

This game is Sony's Fable 1.  If possible, they are hyping KZ2 worse than Moylneux did F1.

That much, eh?  Showing one trailer, then going in to complete silence about the game for a whole two years, after which they showed one gameplay demonstration, then went back into complete silence for another 9 months, and then showed one more gameplay demonstration, and then went back into complete silence yet again = Sony overhyping?

Killzone 2's history is far different than that of the original Fable.  Sony never said Killzone 2 would be able to do A, B, C, and D and will be one of the best games ever.  The only thing they said KZ2 would have (through the CGI trailer) is great graphics, and they have delivered on that.

It's only fans and journalists that could be accused of overhyping Killzone, and considering how many threads like this pop up every other day, there's certainly just as much negative hype as there is positive.

GG was second party when the trailer was released, yes.  Sony then bought GG in December 2005 and started pumping loads of resources (from cash, to other developers) into Killzone 2.

The GD08 gameplay demonstration had much better textures and explosions/particle effects than the E307 demonstration:

Of course, it still doesn't compare to the E305 trailer in terms of sheer polygon count, but things like fire and lighting look better in the actual game..

I hadn't seen that one yet, there's definitely an improvement there.
