So as everyone knows, I purchased a Nintendo week exactly four weeks ago. And since I have massive amounts of free time on my hands, I figured I'd give everyone an update on what I think of the Wii, and all that's happened in the last month. I took the Wii back... No, I'm kidding, I still have it and love it. I'm going to go over the Wii and give my super unbiased opinon of the system now that I am an owner.
I'll start off with the most innovative and talked about part of the system. The Wii Remote. Nintendo really knows how to make a good controller. Sony needs to learn something from Nintendo, this is how motion controls are done. The way it feels in your hand is perfect. It feels like it's contoured to my unique grip and it never gets uncomfortable. Very well manufactured, and quite sturdy. I also love the Wii-mote condom. The silicon, or rubber, or whateva it is makes it almost impossible to slip out of your hands, and it's just fun pressing on the material. My only gripe is that the Wii doesn't come with rechcargable batteries, but I'll most likely buy the Nyko thingy and charge then if and when I get my second Wii-remote.
Next, I'll talk about the console. First off, it's so light. It feels sturdy for it's size, like it's packed inside of it, but at the same time, it's not too heavy. I love the stand, and having it sit up. It looks so pretty. The hidden ports for the Gamecube controller and memory card are placed well, and out of the way. I also absolutely love it has full b/c with Gamecube games. Much like the twenty/sixty gig PS3, the Wii can play every Gamecube game that has released which is awesome for people who haven't owned the previous conosle, and can play tens of good GC games (
). Which I'm putting to use right now. I'm playing Tales of Symphonia, because Soriku wouldn't shut up about it, and it's a hell of a game. I plan on playing Pikmin 1/2 and Zelda: WW on the GC also.
Now I'll go on to talk about the GUI. The Wii uses "Channels" that all look like little TV channels where you click on a channel and then do whatever you can in the channel. To put it bluntly, this interface iz teh suxxorz. I mean, it is a horrible interface. It does what it needs to do, somewhat well, but it's horrible. if you have more than twelve channels the new channels spill over into the next page (up to 4) and so on. Not having everything at your fingertips is a pretty awful design choice from Nintendo. Very poor indeed.
Onto online infrastructure. Every Wii has a friend code. In order for you to become Wii friends, you have to enter their Wii code, and they have to enter yours. Instead of using a friend invite thing, a la the PS3 or 360, Ninty has this. And I hate it with a passion. I'm not going to harp on it, because everyone knows how much this sucks, so I should just move on. The Wii shop channel is where you can download Wii ware (original) games, and VC games. Both services are awesome, and content is easy to locate in a variety of ways. Microsoft would be smart to learn from Nintendo on grouping content. You buy stuff using points, not real dollars like the PSN, but each point equals a penny, so it's much easier to convert than MS points. One thing that would be nice is in-game messaging. You are alerted of a message whether the system is on or off (Wii connect 24 enables) by a pulsing blue light. And it'd be nice to answer it in-game, rather than leave the game. Let's hope that's on the clipboard for the future. I'm not going to mention space limitations, and start a flame-war as there are rumours of SD card unlocking coming soon (E3?) so hopefully that happens, I'm down to 1000 blocks (from 2400?).
Let's talk about games baby! I have Zelda: TP, SSBB, ToS, and unfortunately, Wii Sports. I'd rather Nintendo take out Wii sports, and let me pay 200 bucks for the system. That'd be better. Zelda is awesome, I'm loving it, as ToS (for the GC) and SSBB. I want SMG and MK Wii, and will eventually buy RE4: Wii and MP3. I'm also excited about the future outlook of the games.
PS360 owners should give the Wii a chance. It's a hell of a system that is sold out all the time for a reason. It's full of win.
