Forums - Gaming - Year of the new IP

Just one year without sequals. What could this mean for the industry? Ofcourse it can't be every year, let's say a cycle of 5 years or once the first new console is announced. Games can be released on last-gen and next gen. Small developers can focus their project on this particular year. Leading developers also make an new IP. That year might not be the best one in sales. However this will help developers to esthablish more new franchises. I believe that more new franchises will help expand the market. Because existing franchises won't be taking all the hype. GTA, Halo, Mario & GT. Big publishers will have enough time to release their squals min. 4 years. They also don't have to consider sticking with the winning-concept so their room for innovation. Although it's a restriction to the market, gaming will get fresh air with unknown IPs. It will change the face of gaming for one year.

It is a good idea. So many new IP's go under the radar. Folklore for example. It is one of the best adventure games on the PS3, but will likely not see a sequel because of poor sales. Your idea will never happen though, because it is easier to develop the next installment to a popular franchise, then to come up with a new idea.

Lots of gamers will buy new IPs including me

heh, I thought it was you :P

Yep, I was pretty confused too

A year with only new IPs would probably be a year with stagnant (or declining) sales ... Like all forms of entertainment it is far easier to attract people to a new idea based on an existing IP than it is to get someone interested in a new IP.

Yes, the same picture. I clicked just as many pages on google image as you. :)

I don't think a new idea is really the problem though. Developers almost always say: "we have lots of great ideas".

Edit
I think it depends on the advertising budget. This also means that big publishers will have a bigger advantage.

I think that I´d buy a lot more new IPs, but I don´t think the game sales would be as big, so they would start doing sequels for the new IPs that sold well and, soon enough we would be right back where we started.

Aren't they making a sequel via PSP? Or something along those lines?

Folklore is a very niche game and was never expected to be a huge seller

I disagree.

last year we saw bigger and better new IPs... like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Portal, Rockband...

as oppose to this year, where you can't really name any big new IP, this is a year dominated by GOOD franchises. GTA, MGS, SSBB, MK, GeoW, Resistent, DMC...
