Forums - Sales - May NPD shows sales surge for PSP while all others decline

Yeah JDWolf36 ,the issue is that the weekly data of this site isnt very accurate about the PSP in May as the NPD data has showed .It should (and will I think ) be changed but what the NPD data show is increasing sales the last three months and not the contrary .

and the 360, and the ds, and the ps2........nice post.

Sony have also spent a lot of money on a new marketing campaign... (US at least).

I still don't really understand all this. How many people on this forum would buy a PSP, then NOT buy games for it?

Is Sony making money off PSP hardware alone?

(recent figures have shown DS:PSP software sales to be around 6:1... where hardware is closer to 2.5:1?)

Very nice post and it is on topic completely.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I'm curious to see how the so-called PSP slim will fit into all this.

Its a real mystery. Its like that in every country for the PSP. Somehow, it sells ASS for software. Everywhere. It can do 200k sales in a month but not even able to chart ONE game in the top 15? Normally I would blame it on the piracy, as well all know PSP is heavily pirated, but it still doesnt add up. Piracy is a big deal, but Piracy is THAT bloody mainstream that it should be eviscerating software sales like that.

This is anecdotal as hell but I am starting to think retail is playing a part in it. PSP software sales have been abysmal for such a long time in comparsion to the always constrained DS that I notice every store that I go into has a much smaller PSP section for games/hardware and accessories. Meanwhile the DS has massive sections with massive software areas where you can even still pickup games that were on the market back towards the DS release. They just push the DS so much more leaving that PSP area barren and small. I dont think the software for it will ever really improve outside of small bumps.

This would suggest that the other functions of the PSP are paying off and are selling points especially to non gamers.

My problem with this is that the UMD format is a complete flop. This isn't just anecdotal: I know with certainty that both Toys R Us and Best Buy have drastically cut down on the number of PSP movies being sold nation wide, and I can only presume it's because they didn't sell (they certainly don't at my store). Toys R Us now carries less than half the UMD movies they did 9 months ago (not just my store -- it's mandated company wide).

This means the MP3 player and photo album are the main selling points. I'm not saying that those can't play SOME role in people's decisions, but it seems unlikely that they're so important that the PSP would have half the attach rate of the DS. I'm not saying you're wrong, Ck; I'm just saying it still doesn't seem to add up in a way that makes sense to me.
