So you are telling me with the largest increase in revenue in 10 years, that the video game market is not expanding faster than it ever has?

"As we have discussed before, Nintendo has operated based upon our basic strategy to "Expand the gaming populations" and have been able to significantly expand the total video game market in the last two years." - Nintendo.com

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/080425/06.html

From their mouths.

Of course it is expanding faster, in revenue.

In sales it is still expanding just like it always has done. And at the moment Nintendo is the main reason for that (last two generations it was Sony being the main reason)

What? "like it always has done"?

Last gen (average on 6 years):
PS2: 16.5 mill per year
GC: rufly 3.5 mill per year
Xbox: rufly 4 mill per year
--------------------
= 24 mill per year

2007: 33 mill PS360+Wii

2008: 48 mill PS360+Wii

This year will see double console sales of average in last gen. That is not expanding like it always has done. That is HUGE expanding of video game market.

Firstly this is USA only.

3rd gen - approx 40 million (34 for NES)
4th gen - approx 45 million
5th gen - approx 65 million
6th gen - approx 85 million

That is your generational increase. (home console only) Now for the time into gen.

This is the sales of 6th gen America as of June 2003 (2.5 years after launch of PS2, 1.5 after other two)

ConsoleMonthlyTotal
579,804 16,733,918
367,582 20,559,358
135,596 6,080,594
109,833 4,528,470

That's a total of about 31 million home consoles (not including over 4 million Dreamcasts)

This generation we have this:

ConsoleMonthlyTotal
679,499 23,702,786
652,799 12,544,386
282,174 13,005,705
269,677 5,213,237
236,895 11,836,392

A total of about 30 million home consoles. LESS than last gen (mainly due to the market leader being the early bird in 6th gen, had it been Wii to launch first it would probably be slightly over last gen)

Handhelds have a different launch period DS+PSP have been out for a year and a half longer than GBA had (and there ae two consoles compared to one)

Last gen console unit sales (averaged on 6 years):
PS2: 16.5 mill per year
GC: rufly 3.5 mill per year
Xbox: rufly 4 mill per year
--------------------
24 mill consoles per year

2007: 33 mill PS360+Wii consoles

2008: 48 mill PS360+Wii consoles

This year will see double console UNIT sales compared to the average in last gen. That is not expanding like it always has done. That is HUGE expanding of video game market.

==> maybe u should compare with others generations if u really want to see if this gen is expanding as before or better than before.

Even more,in ur last post, u just compare "average sales for 6 years for the last generation" that include the last years where sales are pretty low vs the 2008 year where all the 3 consoles PS360wii willl sell like hot cake.

I m guessing Ninty is expanding the market in a better way that Sony did in the 5th and 6 th generations but u did not really prove it in ur last post.

hehe

well, I m not sure it will work for Japan or PAL.

Nice spin, but unfair comparison m8.

05th Jan 2002 to 29th Jun 2002:
Console XB GC GBA PS2
America
1,046,337
635,861
2,573,494
2,676,297
= 6.93 million units

05th Jan 2008 to 28th Jun 2008:
Console Wii PS3 X360 PSP DS
America
3,924,967
1,688,839
1,699,753
1,709,573
3,652,954

= 12.57 million units, or an 80% increase over the comparable period in 2002!

I did in a sense, but I wouldn't put it that way. I more or less got a 360 to compliment my Wii.

You see they're not buying games on it, right? They're buying it, it's like something they break out when people come over, and it's maybe a fun thing, but it's almost like the same people that buy a karaoke machine, you know? They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty."

This qoute is just insane for a MS represantative, so now the Wii is equal to a karaoke machine and not a gaming console??

That quote is true for me though.

I haven't bought a game since wii play came out.

I originally intended to buy games for it though....

Get out casual

=)

Mr Aaron Greenberg: "I think for us, we don't really see the Wii as a direct competitor, we [X360] actually very much complement the Wii experience."

Are you surprised that M$ PR guy would slam the Wii on its biggest weakness?
