Forums - Microsoft - Do you think MS will ever be "number 1" just like Nintendo was/is and Sony?

Interesting question and a lot of really dumb answers.

Any company could become number one. Just because you hate MS doesn't mean they can never be number one. And if you're a Sony fanboy saying that it could never happen, you don't have a whole lot of room to talk at the moment. Relatively speaking, the PS3 still isn't even selling that well in Japan. It's still an unproven console so far.

Really I would have thought people on these boards would have looked at it differently. They seem to have the software side licked aka boatloads of fucking games being sold and had trouble with the hardware aka the rrod. They do innovate, they just do it in a manner that is behind the scenes in their research division which keeps mum on all things new, hell they have many many university research departments in their pocket. They were the first to come up with the idea for AJAX(in Outlook). What you do not realize is that all companies buy most of their innovations. They see a start up that does something special and they buy them.

Companies tend to buy Microsoft software because "No one ever got fired for buying Microsoft" ... On top of that, a lot of companies still believe that they need the same level of support from companies that they needed in the 90s which eliminates the option of open-source and small company projects.

I thought most companies Pirate Microsoft...

Hey, like they say though... if you're going to pirate someone... pirate us.

It worked for Photoshop.

LOL.  I was not saying companies are buying most of M$'s innovations.  I am saying that a company like Google might buy a start up that adds something innovative to their business.  M$ is very good at supporting businesses, they will take care of you all the way from Sharepoint to Exchange Server.

And no, companies do not pirate M$ software.  Too much at stake.  Individuals at home, however, are a different story.

I think in due time. (unless the next xbox president sucks)

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

If microsoft was continually agreesive with their consoles there's no dought in my mind that they'd at least achieve resectable positions , 1st isn't out of the question , every gen is a new race.

Unlikely. Because in the video game industry, consumer view of your console tends to be forever tied to your first entry. For this reason, the 360 is still seen as a hardcore shooter console even though it has a greater diversity of games than the ps3.

If M$ had been the one to release the wii, it probably still won't have been seen as family friendly. Nintendo was able to pull it off because you have to remember that the nes was described as "family computer entertainment" or something like that.

Thus, the only way M$ can win is by winning >90% of the hardcore but this is unlikely because they'd have to buy nintendo's first party IPs, Sony's GT, and all major third party AAA series like FF, RE, etc

Probably not. MS has made it's living over the years, from copying other companies.

And I mean everything. Here are some of there latest ideas.

Zune (ipod)
Silverlight (Flash)
Vista (OSX)
Microsoft Spaces (.Mac)

All the way back to the start, anything MS did, you could point to some established market it was trying to overtake. Gaming is no different to them.

The problem, is gaming is different. MS it trying to tackle the hardware, and success is in the software. (odd that a software company doesn't get that).

They have, can, and will be successful in the gaming industry, but Nintendo has the advantage, that all there top games are owned by Nintendo. It will be very hard to overcome that in the next 20-30 years.

Edit: To be more clear, MS is buyng exclusive, and not makeing them. Games like Gears will never be locked up forever my MS. It's only temporary. Halo is theres, but that's about it.

It's not that the 360 doesn't have a lot of games, it's that no one thinks of MS when you talk about them.

When you think of MS in respect to gaming, you think of the 360. When you think of Nintendo with respect to gaming, you think of Mario, Zelda, and MP.

Until the first thing that enters your mind with you think of MS is Halo, <next game>, and <another game>, MS will never be #1.

Why not. 360 has the best games, maybe 720 will get the sales that a superior product deserves. Too bad that ms needs some (a lot) casual/kiddie games to be the number one. :(

I agree with everyone saying about Japan. But they also need to worry about the rest the of the world also. In EU, the UK carries most Microsoft market share. Outside of that, its been Wii or Sony. Unfortunately, I don't think it will change as along as "Microsoft" appears in front of the console. EU countries have denounced Microsoft and EU regulators are in constant battles with Microsoft and its anti trust fines.

Like I said, its next gen console should team up with a Japanexe company like Toshiba or Samsung and get that stick of being a Microsoft owned system off them.

I'm just saying...
