So anyway, are any of these 360 JRPG exclusives going to make any of you JRPG-hardcore non-360 owners get one?

My guess...no.

To have the Hardcore-JRPG-non-360-Fan buy the system, it would to have an undisputed AAA RPG. Games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and ToV are too debatable in quality. Infinite Undiscovery I predict will fall into the same category, time will tell.

Star Ocean:TLH is the only currently announced 360 JRPG that I think could cause people to purchase a 360.

Obviously this isn't the case for everyone though, just the majority of them. (this of course is just my speculative opinion with conjecture as my main source of evidence)

JRPG fans buying a 360 for The Last Hope doesn't suprise me since SO is very well-regarded among gamers

Agreed

I just wonder how many people will hold off on buying Star Ocean:TLH under the assumption/hope that it goes to the PS3. (i think reviews will play some part in this)

I just hope the voice acting is better then it was in the last game, man that was terrible. Fayt's voice acting was pretty good, but Sophia (especially) just pissed me off. Why do so many female voice actors give Teenage Girls that light and sugary over the top voice that is the audio equivalent to a feather.

Tri-Ace seem to be putting a lot of effort into SO4 as evidenced by the impressive graphics in the screenshots that were confirmed to be real-time.  Now let's see how the story and gameplay is.  Hopefully at E3.  If not, TGS

I don't think ToV is debatable in quality. I mean it has Team Symphonia working on it after all. It should be great.

I think i should have worded that better.

I don't mean debatable in general quality, I meant debatable in terms of AAA or Elite quality.

Team Symphonia is AAA/Elite :P But I think I know what you mean. Mainstream quality right? Like FF or MGS?

He means 90%+ like MGS4 and FFXII

ooo....list has a distinct lack of Disgaea....or are we not counting SRPG's....I love that game for the humor, some of the best in any video game imo. No worries if you disagree or haven't tried it though.

You'll have to tell me where Persona 3 ends up after you play it, I truly love that game.

OMG....no earthbound ; ;

a good list regardless though. Sad to see games I'll probably never play, but hopefully some new games eek their way in that list, nothing better than playing a game that actually beats out some of the classics.

Yeah, for the sake of making things easier, I chose to not include SRPG's. If I did, you would have seen Disgaea, Fire Emblem, Gemfire, and Final Fantasy Tactics on the list. Although, I did include Bahamut Lagoon.... I guess should go remove that, haha.

I'll let you know once i play Persona 3, I'll probably play it in August.

Yeah, I haven't played Earthbound, even though I have the ROM on my CPU. Most of the SNES RPG's i've played are all on my CPU through Roms. The only ones I actually beat on a SNES system are FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger and Mystic Quest.

yup, pretty much

Because of its Art Design and Style, ToV doesn't appeal to the North American market as much.

As for Tales of Symphonia, it's #10 on my Post-Snes RPG List and and #15 on my all-time RPG list, so I concur in its "Eliteness", but a lot of people will disagree.

Did you ever play Radiata Stories? It's like a Suikoden/Tales/Star Ocean hybrid.

The art design and style have nothing to do with the "Tales of" series being debatable in AAA quality. i.e. Persona 3 and FES mangaed to get 88% and 89% respectively

EDIT:DQVIII also got 90% on gamerankings and that game was cel-shaded

yeah I quit in the middle of the .hack games, battle system just got on my nerves I guess. I really did enjoy the concept of the games though.

You have an impressive number of RPG's played Stats,
might be more than my own, I'll have to make a list and see.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for spiky hair, teenage angst and cataclysmic storytelling.

Yeah, sometimes I cannot believe how many of them I've beaten, even games I only found to be ok. I guess I always wanted to see how they ended and forced myself to beat them.

My Top 10 of all time would be (not including SNES)

  1. Final Fantasy X
  2. Xenogears
  3. Kingdom Hearts II
  4. Suikoden II
  5. Final Fantasy 8
  6. Kingdom Hearts
  7. Final Fantasy VII
  8. Star Ocean:Second Story
  9. Suikoden III
  10. Tales of Symphonia

Honorable Mention, Suikoden I and V, Chrono Cross, Dark Cloud II, DQVIII and Rogue Galaxy

But yeah, I love my RPG's. The worst RPG i ever beat was probably Legaia 2:Duel Saga, but that had a really fun battle system.

That is indeed a great list. While mine would be somewhat similar, I'd have to include some SRPG's

  1. FFX
  2. FF XIII
  3. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
  4. Suikoden II
  5. Dark Cloud 2
  6. Dragon Quest XIII
  7. Final Fantasy XII
  8. Xenogears
  9. Final Fantasy Tactics
  10. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Nice to see that someone else thinks FFIV is the greatest SNES game. Cannot wait for the DS remake!

Is that a mistake or anticipation?

  1. Final Fantasy X
  2. Secret of Mana
  3. Suikoden III
  4. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  5. Chrono Trigger
  6. ales of Symphonia
  7. Final Fantasy VI
  8. Xenogears
  9. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  10. Skies of Arcadia

I'm seriously considering a 360, but I'm waiting to see where Suikoden and maybe Xenogears go. If they come to Wii I'll probably take the 360 RPG's over FFXIII.

  1. If I were to include all the systems? Oh boy, this will be hard, I'll make it Top 25 and combine the two
  2. Final Fantasy X
  3. Xenogears
  4. Final Fantasy IV
  5. Final Fantasy VI
  6. Kingdom Hearts II
  7. Chrono Trigger
  8. Suikoden II
  9. Final Fantasy VIII
  10. Kingdom Hearts
  11. Final Fantasy VIII
  12. Seiken Densetsu III
  13. Star Ocean: Second Story
  14. Suikoden 3
  15. Tales of Phantasia
  16. Tales of Symphonia
  17. Super Mario RPG
  18. Final Fantasy V
  19. Rogue Galaxy
  20. Suikoden V
  21. Suikoden 1
  22. Dark Cloud II
  23. Terranigma
  24. Chrono Cross
  25. Final Fantasy XII ( I forgot to add this to my Honorable Mention list before)
  26. Mystic Quest
  27. Just Missed the Cut: DQVIII, Bahamut Lagoon

  28. I kind of hate making lists like this, it's so hard to rank the games I love and have to leave some of them off the list. Because games like Star Ocean:Till the End of Time, Shadow Hearts:Covenant etc. get left off even though I really like them.

  1. It would be a lot easir for me to make this kind of list since I haven't played as many RPGs as you did

haha, probably.
I thought about it some more, and here is my Top 25 (Again, Only Turn Based and Action JRPG's)

  1. Final Fantasy X
  2. Xenogears
  3. Final Fantasy IV
  4. Final Fantasy VI
  5. Kingdom Hearts II
  6. Chrono Trigger
  7. Suikoden II
  8. Final Fantasy VIII
  9. Final Fantasy VII
  10. Kingdom Hearts
  11. Star Ocean: Second Story
  12. Suikoden 3
  13. Seiken Densetsu III
  14. Tales of Symphonia
  15. Rogue Galaxy
  16. Suikoden V
  17. Final Fantasy XII
  18. Suikoden I
  19. Dark Cloud II
  20. Final Fantasy IX
  21. Chrono Cross
  22. Valkyrie Profile
  23. Final Fantasy V
  24. Super Mario RPG
  25. Terranigma

Just Missed the Cut: DQVIII and Mystic Quest

And to try and stay on the original topic, will Infinite Undiscovery make this list one day?

Time will tell....

I have my doubts about IU but I must say, the art direction is very good

no, no, no

I'm not saying the Art Design has anything to do with how good the game is.

The original question is whether any of the 360 RPG's would cause Hardcore-JRPG Fans to convert over to the 360. (mainly those who are anti-xbox) My point was that only Mainstream AAA games could cause this shift (specifically in Europe and North America) and that Tales Games because of their Visual Design don't have the mass appeal needed. So no matter how good Tales of Vesperia is, it wouldn't cause a noticeable shift to the 360 from the JRPG crowd.

Which is why I think Star Ocean is their best "hope", because it is an established Franchise with the mass Visual Appeal to go with it.

Although I think LO and BD are great JRPGs, some people do wear the Gooch's rose-tinted glasses when they pour accolades at them. The games have very old concepts and gameplay and has been sugarcoated with the big individuals behind them. The whole development team behind it has to be great and experienced, not just the leader.

Thats why I think the upcoming 360 JRPGs will be much less 'debatable' as you say. They are from big name teams like Namco, Tri-Ace who have more collective experience at making a good JRPG.
