Forums - Gaming - Who remembers Lik-sang?

Poor guys, I was recently just reading their website notice again, they've taken the comments off.

I got my Launch PSP/DS Lite from them + multiple games, It really makes me feel good about Sony struggling so hard with the PS3 after what they (Sony) have done.

I really don't want to kick off a big PS3 bashing but this is a great article from a guy who was angry about the whole Sony/Lik-Sang incident.

Lik-sang was a great website that thrived off of selling products for the Playstation 2(DDR pads anyone?). It's sad how everything went down.

Be forewarned: this guy is really vulgar and his site probably isn't work or family-friendly. He's okay in my book though. He's a really clever writer.

The saddest part was SCEE using LikSang.com to import stuff for their own top directors, and then suing them into oblivion.

He use to be a really clever writer, but now he's too into himself and his new posts (when he does post) just get more and more lame.  I haven't really found myself laughing at Maddox in years.

"In 2002, the company was sued by major game console producers, such as Sony Computer Entertainment, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc., alleging contributory copyright infringement, since the mod chips (and other related devices) enabled playing of pirated game titles on those consoles. "

"The ruling in the High Court of Hong Kong sees Lik-Sang ordered to cease distribution of the devices (Flash Cards and Flash Linkers), as well as paying Nintendo's legal expenses and preliminary damages of HK$5 million (€550,000)"

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=20489

But, as reported by the Financial Times, Judge Fysh ruled that, "The acts of which the complaint is made have, in my view, been perpetrated not in Hong Kong but here in the EEA, and without Sony's consent."

Law is law... blind fanboys use this argument against Sony but Nintendo and Microsoft were in the same situation. I think there's no more to say about this story.

Yeah, shame you neglected this part of the Wikipedia article you've just quoted:

"After these suits, Lik-Sang began expanding its area of expertise by reinventing itself (under a new owner) as a vendor of legitimate, but obscure, accessories, such as consumer electronics, games, merchandise, and t-shirts."

The Nintendo suit in 2002, mentioned in the 2003 gamesindustry.biz article is the one about modchips, et all. The 2006 article is about "grey importing", which is a totally different matter. So no, there sure is more to say on this story than what you've cleverly tried to make us believe.

What's on LikSang.com is about the imports suit, not the much older modchips suite. Importing may be illegal, as may modchips, but that's nowhere nearly as consensual or clear cut. And you better know what exactly is it that's illegal, before making those comments, because unauthorized importing not illegal per si as Sony wants to make you believe. What's illegal is, for instance, selling stuff in Europe without offering a 2-year warranty, as no consumer electronics equipment can be sold in Europe without at least a 2-year warranty. What's illegal is for a significant exporter to Europe not to abide to the likely stricter European safety regulations. And if on the one hand it's good that there's this level of consumer protection in Europe, on the other it significantly limits perfectly legitimate businesses like import shops. Because there are a ton of perfectly legitimate import shops, despite what Sony wants you to believe in. Import DVDs are sold on reputable stores like FNACs every god damn day. It's certainly not any different for videogames.

And if you're to believe Lik-Sang, SCEE did order a bunch of PSPs for their directors the day the PSP launched in Japan. You know what's Sony's answer to these claims? That the "purchasing of PSP consoles by SCE employees", like the managing, marketing, creative and development directors of SCEE, "would be for investigatory purposes". I like it how the marketing and creative directors purchase import consoles by name come launch day to investigate just how illegal they are.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

You dont know the details it seems KruzeS... you haven't read all the case... Or do you mean justice has made a mistake ? Do you know the difference between hardware import and software import ? Lik-Sang has an history of illegal business and grey import is a part of it... If you think justice has made a mistake then we wait for you to show us... Sony has nothing to do personnaly with that... It coud have been Microsoft or Nintendo... when a business dont respect internationnal law there's no defense... lik-sang was to big to be ignored.
