Forums - Sales - Nintendo floods the market with Wii?

Seriously folks, lay off MikeB. His threads are usually a panegyric on the wondrous powers of teh Cell, but this isn't one of them. It's good to know that the Wii is well stocked in the Netherlands. Why some are vehemently trying to deny this, I have no idea. It's like having anti-Kwaads posting in this thread.

More to the point, I don't understand why Wii stock levels are even an issue anymore. It was a real point of debate in early 2007, because the common logic was that Wii was a fad, and as soon as it stopped selling out, sales would plummet. Obvious that was wrong, yet many are still acting as though that flawed logic were true. (Wii fans think they must "prove" that Wii is still sold out everywhere, 360/PS3 fans trying to prove the opposite.)

Honestly, the Wii sold 500k consoles worldwide last week! Compared to that, isn't it meaningless whether or not the thing is in stock? Clearly, people are still buying it regardless.

I can't understand why people are so against the idea that shops have Wiis. It's bizarre! Even stranger is the fact that it's the Wii fanboys who are most opposed to the idea. You'd think they'd be celebrating that Nintendo had finally got its act together and upped production, and the easy availability will mean even greater Wii domination of the hardware charts. But I guess fanboys don't think logically.

I think they are thinking logically in a way. the logic is that as long as demand is not being met there was the possibility that demand was unlimited and production could increase to e.g. 5 million a month and each of those 5 million would be sold.  If however, demand is being met then it means there is indeed a limit to how much Wii can sell which is a disappointment for Wii fanboys.

No that I don't believe you on those last two stores...

but I could take the same pictures... yet there are no wiis buy me.

The stores by me keep "Display only" boxes of wiis up... even when they have no Wiis.

Considering you live in the Netherlands people likely only disbeleived you because of your usual propencity to overplay anything not in PS3's detriment.

You're Amazing. They have Wiis.

Do I get an apology if I post a picture undoubtably stating the Wii is instock at Intertoys?

Why should some stores have tons of Wii and others nothing for certain?

Note I directly said I believe you. Simply said that anybody in the US in the ares that have stock problems could take the same pictures. As a comparison for anyone from America who might take the same pictures and think Wii's are in stock in areas where they aren't because they've never actually tried to get one.

Mostly so this doesn't devolve into a "Everywhere has wii's even everywhere in the US!" thread when it's really just display boxes.

When were there consumer woes in the Netherlands anyway?  I thought you could find the things there for months and months.  I remember that's where a bunch of people from the UK got theres when they couldn't get any in the UK.

Wii availability has been a bitch in the Netherlands for the last 6 months, so this really is a change worth mentioning. To sum up the situation of Wii availability in the Netherlands so far:

Launch - first half of 2007:Wiis nowhere to be found

July 2007 - November 2007: Wiis got in stock because of increased supply, supply was enough to meet demand until the end of November 2007

December 2007 - June 2008: Wiis nowhere to be found (well, I saw a bundle or 2 in that whole period, still not really worth mentioning)

Now: Wiis in stock again for a few weeks now, so it looks like the scenario from 2007 is repeating itself. I wonder if they'll have enough stock this time to get through both Sinterklaas and Christmas this year or that supply will be gone at the beginning of December like last year.

I saw a pile of Wiis at a Costco near me once... but only that one time

@ Neos

it saddens me you have such an abundance of time

Is this new? Anyway I overlooked it the first time on the first page.

When I was a moderator at two very large tech related community websites, I would have told you to behave.

A lot of enthusiastic effort is put this website and that's why I like this website, why make useless posts like these? Why not try to contribute something yourself when you run into something interesting to report or add constructive postings at least?

Exactly.

Why are people not happy that Wii's are readily available in stores.  If I were a Wii Fanboy, I'd be sipping champagne, celebrating, and waiting for next weeks sales.

I mean, I don't get why no one would believe him that the Wii is readily in stock.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that they can't say "Supply Constraint", or something the like.  I don't know.  It's so weird though.  If a sold-out item, as much in demand as people would believe is readily in stock, that'd mean monumental sales.

To be fair, *most* people were saying that they'd be happy if it were true, and that they believed him that it happened.  1-2 people disagreed, and Sqrl said he doubted the number but not the overal fact of 'a lot' of Wiis.

In this case, I think MikeB just had a persecution complex and overreacted to what people were saying; most people were reasonable, with such statements as:

but it does appear that Nintendo has been increasing supply

I noticed that Media Markt frequently get big supplies (like Wii Fit) and within a few days it's sold out

i believe you , it is not a real strange thing to see anymore

Wiis in stock in large quantity I believe, but I don't for a second buy that there are 300 of them. During X-mas some of the largest retail outlets in the US didn't get 300 units. Sounds like they had a lot of units and you exaggerated the amount a bit?

Etc.  This last one, I think Sqrl was right on; huge numbers, but probably not 300 (which could EASILY be a hyperbolic statement, because who is seriously going to count up to 300 Wiis in a store?)

Overall, this thread is a case study in overreacting and not reading what people are saying.  Most people were being reasonable.

Especially once they found out this was in the Netherlands; we've been hearing for a while now how EU is no longer supply-constrained.

I don't know, it just seems like people don't want it to happen. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I'm wrong.

I think MikeB just had a persecution complex

Come on, I was polite throughout. I don't want to say bad things about people I don't know, but really...

There was a lack of support (mostly childishness) until later on by people like shams. IMO I have shown enough evidence for someone like Sqrl to come down from his throne and say sorry for putting doubt towards my contribution and doing nothing to ask others not to derail this thread.
