Forums - Sales - M$ price drop in America will Sony have to respond?

Selnor - What ever made you think that the 360 could sustain 12K weekly sales in Japan?

Sony will wait and see how much the 360 price drop effects sales, and how much of a boost the next shipment of 80GB PS3's give.
Yeah Iknow. Thats the part of my sig I think I'll eat. But I'm rather confident about the rest. Based on titles and price drop. I think 360 will outsell for that period.

Price drop is the most desperate measure. The last resort. It means only one thing. "Upcoming X360 exclusive games can not match PS3 exclusive games."

Killzone 2 and RFOM2? Bah! I would take left 4 dead over the whole lineup of PS3 exclusives. Valve is Jesus and Microsoft is god to me.

We sure know where you're coming from now...happy worshipping!

On point though, M$ has won over its home turf from Sony even though the Nintendo is still winning all anyway. A pice cut would only bring huge losses to SCE so they probably won't drop the price except PS3's are suddenly much cheaper to manufacture. This late in the game, M$'s leat is insurmountable and the ps3 could only catch up if its around for a VERY LONG time and the x360 isn't.

If I was the boss of SCEI, I'll focus on retaining their last stronghold (Europe)  and start by dropping the price there since the euro is more valuable than the dollar right now.

Thus far we get regular reports (See the NA sales thread) of 80GB consoles out in the wild, and yet PS3 sales are still tiny given we are 2/3 weeks from the biggest PS3 exclusive that will exist until the end of next year.

Microsoft on the other hand has a number of high-profile appealing (to Western gamers) exclusives due at the end of the year. We all know sales and profile wise Gears 2 will stomp on Resistance 2 (regardless of quality), Fable 2 is the sequel to a last-gen game that sold about 3 million and every hands-on in existence has been positive.

As for the whole BK3 vs LBP thing? They have as good a shot at promoting sales as eachother.

To answer the OP. Sony will only respond if they can still create the illusion they'll eventually turn a PS3 profit for investors.

For once, I actually agree with starcraft. The investors are the reason I don't believe any price cut is coming to the US but maybe the EU will get one.

Sony is more or less dead worldwide anyway. And no they will not respond, they cannot afford too. They already stated PS3 will not get a price cut in fiscal 2008 (which runs until March 31 2009).

It looks like the x360 was still in LAST place last week. I hope you're not delusional enough to think that Japanese sales will push it up!

Sony can't afford to drop the price on a ps3 till sony's economies of scale for the console increase... I'd say when r2 and motorstorm 2 come out etc the price will decrease to attract even more sales.

Hey atleast his predictions will be much more accurate than the PS3 fanboys who believe PS3 will magically overtake 360 Q4 of 08 and Q1 of 09. LOL.

It's funny how PS3 fans always have to refer to something like EU sales and feel happy even though last gen they are way ahead. I guess they have very little to hold onto nowadays. First MGS4 will move HW and now its the 80GB bundles? Whats next? Lair 2?

And in terms of it being desperate by dropping the price what about the bundle which actually in reality made them bring back BC because they knew PS3 library isn't helping ppl choose the PS3 so they had to add BC so ppl can actually say atleast we can play PS2 games. I would call that more desperate. And how about them copying everything XBL has?

Do you 360 fans realize how foolish you are comeing off. Ober thecourse of 32 weeks on the Market, with your biggest franchises launched, the 360 is averageing 610k a month. In comparrison, Sony with 20 months (14 in Europe), With only small handfull of it's largest franchises, and a more expensive Price point, has averaged 692k a month. honestly there is no doubt which console is in higher demand. You guys would be so much better served to just keep silent on these issues and let the generation play out, because everytime you speak you just come off as looking like silly fanboys. As far as i can see this thread was just created to insire a Fanboy flame war. The answer is obvious. If Sony starts loosing sales they will drop too (reluctantly. If their sales hold (or improve as they did in Europe) Sony won't drop. Truth is a price drop has more potential to hurt MS than it does Sony.

You do realize that that math is flawed and doesn't support your POV really. It's simple mathematics really. PS3 has a smaller divisor to go along with its sales while 360 has a much bigger one. Now if we were to go back in time and look at the 360 sales after 20 months and under the same conditions of Europe (which would turn out weird b/c of PS3 only being in Europe a limited time) then the story might be different. Also MS has not had anything big release the first have of this year except maybe NG2 but nothing thats going to move a lot of hardware.  I say might be different.

"In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is rule."

~ Friedrich Nietzsche

What people have to remember is that the PS3 initially cost $600 and the X360 only $400.

The PS3 has since dropped $200 and today costs $400.
The X360 only dropped $50 and costs $350.

The conclusion is that the X360 is lagging with price drops, and since the rumoured US price drop is again just $50, there is no way that PS3 will react to that.

So what we'll do is to look at the effect on sales numbers after this price drop on the X360:

The X360 officially dropped it's price in Europe in mid March this year by the equivalent to $50 which is 50 Euros. But in effect the price drop of X360 has been bigger due to the weakening Dollar during 2008, I'd say rufly 70 Euros (a X360 cost rufly 340 euros last fall/winter and today goes for rufly 270 euros, average prices in Western Europe).

The effect of this drop in price is that after 3 months the X360 still sells rufly 70,000 per week in EU/Others compared to 50,000 before the drop in March. That's a 40% sustained increase (the total increase during these 3 months is a lot bigger).

Sales today PS3:
Jap: ~12,000   (my estimation of stabilized sales after the initial MGS4-effect is gone)
NA: ~50,000
EU/O: ~90,000
--------------------
= 152,000 per week

Sales today X360:
Jap: ~2000
NA: ~57,000
EU/O: ~68,000
------------------------
= 127,000 per week

So the PS3 leads by 25,000 per week today.

But after the price drop in NA the X360 will get rufly 30-40% higher sustained sales than today: 1.35 x 57 --> ~77,000. That is 20,000 higher than the NA X360 sales today. ---> 147,000 X360's per week worldwide after NA price drop.

So the PS3 worldwide lead over X360 will shrink to only 5000 consoles per week this year (higher during holiday season).

As I said, this isn't so dramatic that Sony will want to respond, because they are doing just fine, but it is a nightmare for Sony fanboys because it will take eons to catch the 5.5 million install base lead of the X360 (please forget 2009 already!).
