Forums - Sony - Sony's Arrogance?

So everyone these days have been attacking Sony for not delivering their promise and they are claiming that if the PS3 failed it would be great because of Sony's arrogance and such.

So I found an article on 1up.com that points out past instances by other companies overpromising that has been forgotten maybe by many just to show that arrogant overpromising is not new at all in the video game industry:

"It will be as important an innovation to gaming as 3d was... Imagine games which have no 'loading' screens... Imagine games which persist all of the changes to an environment... Imagine games with real interactive music and true-to-life, non-repetitive commentary. Imagine levels 20x the size of a typical console game."

J Allard, Xbox general manager about the orginal Xbox's hard drive (Hard Drives have been a norm in PCs for years before)

"In the HD Era the platform is bigger than the processor. New technology and emerging consumer forces will come together to enable the rock stars of game development to shake up the old establishment and redefine entertainment as we know it."

J Allard, Xbox general manager about the original Xbox's HD capabilities.

"Imagine a machine with over 500 megabytes of power used only for games play... Two 16-bit processors and enough capacity to use real film imagery... CD quality sound "

Advertisement of the Sega-CD back in the day (Sega-CD was a total failure)

"By offering enhanced processing power and speed, we are confident that our CD ROM, when coupled with a Super NES, will offer a truly superior game experience to cartridge-based games"

and

"The next time when someone tells you that CD-ROM is the wave of the future, tell them that the future doesn't belong to the snails"

Nintendo Power magazine about The Superfamicom ND (also a massive failure)

I'm sure I can find so many other claims by all the 3 console makers that were complete BS and hype but I'm not going to look because it's not what I am trying to do.

What I am trying to point out is this: While Sony's overpromising should be condemned and mocked, we should always remember that they are not the first (or the last) to do this now with the PS3 and that this is a common and regrettable occurence.

In short, you would think companies would learn from their and others' mistakes and stop overpromising and overhyping only to leave people disappointed and that includes Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and all other future console makers.

Interesting. I can tell you that it will get a lot of hits just because of the title.

People call Sony arrogant more for how they treat their customers than what they promise ...

Both the PSP and PS3 are examples of a company which believes that their customers will pay any price for any product that has the word "Playstation" written on it; I could be alone, but I believe that both the PSP and PS3 represent a departure from the strategy which made the Playstation and PS2 successful.

This is not true, the products are expensive because of the stuff under the hood not because Sony is raising the price artificially to milk the customers...

The decision to have that much under the hood you can question but don't tell me they are working their customers when they are losing money on every single PS3 sold...

the sega CD was not an overpromise it was capable of that just too pricey.

Sony gets smack for showing CG as gameplay(aka Killzone). They also get smack for the Emotion engine(old man face and ducks). Nintendo did the same thing as well(project reality and showing an art gallery that wasn't even possible on gameconsoles until the Dreamcast)

HappySquirrel isn't saying they are trying to milk their customers.

If anyone is milking customers, it's Nintendo, right? Offering hardware that is comparable to a last gen machine power-wise, making a profit on every system and game sold, etc, etc. So why aren't they getting hammered by the media? Sony is out of touch with the consumers that made the PS2 skyrocket to fame. There's no denying that.

I smell a debate...

It wasn't even using the 500 mb or whatever, it was unnecessary and hype.

Well, there are some costs for making the design smaller. IF it is the same as an Xbox, I assume making it much much smaller does incur costs. However, yeah. In a sense, it is overpriced.
